I paused,,, read it again,,, read who had posted it again,,, read what had been said again,,, read the name of the boxer to make sure I had read that correct, questioned what was going on, questioned this website, questioned life, questioned my sexuality, questioned humanity, question what the f'k was going on, questioned my existance....

    THEN.....

I scrolled down and was able to put all that to rest.... :-) Life made sense again...

But seriously...... Sven Ottke really was a legend....

Great work! Do they have any type of boxing league or that type of thing in the military where you are?

I too salute a Red and White flag, however my colours happen to be those of the oldest (National) flag in the world, the mighty Dannebrog. Which is of course to say that I hail from the oldest monarchy in the world, namely the not so mighty Denmark. Currently I am living in Finland though, but that's not supposed to be a permanent thing.

As I have lived in England and generally tend to follow English media a fair bit, I declare myself fit to answer this question. A Brit, according to the English press, is someone from Wales or Scotland who happens to be winning at the moment. Joe Calzaghe therefore is a British champion and Andy Murray a British tennis player. Ricky Hatton on the other hand is English, Scott Harrison Scottish and the Welsh rugby team most definitely Welsh.

Whilst this is true, in a take the piss type of way - because us English do tend to be Bristish when it's a Welshman or Scotsman winning at a sport.

But officially; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland form Britain (now United Kingdom). Although we all fight side by side for the British military, have the same currency and have the same governement (well kind of - aside from Scotland??) - we are actually seperate countries.

20 or so years ago if you asked most people from the UK what their nationality was they'd say British - not so much anymore.

One thing you should never do is mistake a Welshman or Scotsman as an Englishman - they hate this (and the English) with a passion.

Never understood that really, I certainly don't feel that way about them...

I was, obviously, taking the piss, but these things (identity, nationalism etc) actually intrigue me quite a bit, so with the risk of learning something new, I have a question for you (or other persons from those Isles):

I wrote Wales and Scotland and left out Northern Ireland on purpose. Was this wrong? Would you, as an Englishman, refer to or think of a person from Northern Ireland as 'British'? And would this characteristic vary according to said person's background (i.e. considering John Duddy not-British, but Brian Magee or David Healy British)?

I'd guessed you were taking the piss mate, was just clarifying incase somebody else didn't realise you were.

As for the NI thingy, you were right (in my opinion) to leave Northern Ireland out.

Whilst NI is part of the United Kingdom it's residents do have a choice between either British or Irish citizenship. I'm guessing if you were Catholic you'd consider yourself Irish and if you were Protestant you'd consider yourself British. John Duddy must be Catholic.

Personally I see somebody from Northern Ireland as Irish, not British - afterall the Irish Rugby team is all of Ireland combined. I find that most people forget that NI is part of the UK.
