As I have lived in England and generally tend to follow English media a fair bit, I declare myself fit to answer this question. A Brit, according to the English press, is someone from Wales or Scotland who happens to be winning at the moment. Joe Calzaghe therefore is a British champion and Andy Murray a British tennis player. Ricky Hatton on the other hand is English, Scott Harrison Scottish and the Welsh rugby team most definitely Welsh.

Whilst this is true, in a take the piss type of way - because us English do tend to be Bristish when it's a Welshman or Scotsman winning at a sport.

But officially; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland form Britain (now United Kingdom). Although we all fight side by side for the British military, have the same currency and have the same governement (well kind of - aside from Scotland??) - we are actually seperate countries.

20 or so years ago if you asked most people from the UK what their nationality was they'd say British - not so much anymore.

One thing you should never do is mistake a Welshman or Scotsman as an Englishman - they hate this (and the English) with a passion.

Never understood that really, I certainly don't feel that way about them...
Dude....I can't speak for every Welshman and Scot currently living in our fair land, but it isn't really hatred, it's just a sort of rivalry that gets hyped up because you lot (the English), and I'm generalising, can be a little arrogant when it comes to sport. So a bit of taunting when you lose, even a desire for you to lose, is natural.

I got a bunch of English mates, and they're just as good lads as my Welsh mates, but we still like a bit of banter.

South Australian - born in the middle of nowhere on a farm outside Minippa which is so damn small you won't find it on most maps, lived in a few country towns, now residing in Adelaide.

Going for Hatton - don't have any sort of educated opinion on the topic - like to participate in boxing but am a slack spectator - just noticed so many people say he's going to get bashed and I like it when the underdog wins

truthfully over all this time i thought the welsh, english, scottish and irish was pretty much mixed so much where you couldnt really tell a difference because everyone is half and half or something.. most white people in america are german/irish/scottish mix and we pretty much concider other white people here the exact same race....

so its weird for me to see people living along side each other for so long yet still see each other as distinctively different...

if an englishman was on a street corner and a group of irish, or welsh or scottish walked by could you tell which country they where from based only on their looks?? does thir faces and hair look different?? just curious

No leave the Irish out of it!
We haven't blown anything up in 20 years! Can we keep it that way!!!!

HaHa as Tommy Tiernan the comic once said....us Irish, we have a real sense of Rivalry..we like to see them get defeated in things like sport...and war.
