I think what you listed is more of a problem on a person to person basis. Some people thrive in Capitalism and some people flounder.
I think charity is something to be done out of the goodness of one's heart and having the government redistribute wealth creates resentment and cheapens the actual gift to those who are struggling. Are you going to feel all warm and cuddly watching someone cash a welfare check or are you going to feel better having a community of people rally around people who are less fortunate?
Welfare creates a sense of entitlement IMO and I think there is more power in working and achieving goals than just having stuff handed out to you. This is why something like Habitat For Humanity is great (eventhough Jimmy Carter made it) you work you build and you see a result and the people you help also build with you and they have real ownership in the finished product, it's a great charity.
And it is great to have debates without resulting to name calling and petty bickering, I do enjoy it
