Default Mayorga Impressive in Vegas Workout!

    By Scoop Malinowski

For those who consider WBC Super Welterweight champ Ricardo Mayorga to be a mere second banana stepping-stone in the Farewell Tour of Oscar De La Hoya which sets off on May 6th, consider these words from a very respected veteran boxing insider who witnessed El Matador's workout in Las Vegas today.

"I have never seen anyone hit the heavy bag like that before in my life," said the veteran ring watcher who has been associated with the elite fighters since the 1960's. "He was actually fighting the heavybag with violence and emotions, he was that focused on destroying the bag. He would walk in and attack the bag like it was actually Oscar De La Hoya. He has that focus and fury now over a week from the fight. I can't imagine anyone standing up to that kind of intensity, that kind of brutality. I have never seen anyone hit the bag like that in my entire life."

From what this man says and the tone of awe he had in saying it, was quite persuasive. Because we know how absolutely unstoppable a force Mayorga can be when he's 110% committed to a fight - such as the first Forrest fight.

The Vegas resident who has seen them all added, "I'm definitely going to bet on Mayorga now."

We know that in sports, emotional adrenaline can sometimes lift the inferior competitor above the superior. There have been several examples, including Oliver McCall vs. Lennox Lewis, Buster Douglas vs. Mike Tyson and Mayorga vs. Forrest I.

However the interesting factor here is that De La Hoya is emotionally motivated for this fight also, as he was extremely bothered by Mayorga's press conference insults. But then again, when you consider the intensity level of Mayorga's emotions at the press conferences, perhaps we can't even begin to empathize just how much this fight means to Mayorga personally and not at all businesswise.

It's Mayorga, the poor Third World underprivileged and unvivilized wild man against what he perceives to be the silver spoon, rich kid, Madison Ave, pretty boy movie star Millionaire who probably couldn't last one week in hardcore Nicaragua, let alone 34 years.

Oh, this is going to be a good one. I can just feel it already.

The boxing world has been waiting a long time to see a Hagler-Hearns type of fight in the welterweight to middleweight weight range. And we've been waiting a long time to see Oscar in an all-time classic, such as the Ike Quartey war.

All the warning signals are there that May 6th "Danger Zone" might be an unforgettable night in boxing history.

I at first dissmissed this fight but as days are nearing the excitement and anticipation is building.
"Very few people really understand what it means to be a fighter. I hate it when I hear someone say, 'That fighter doesn't have guts. I hate that, I don't care if you're a world champion six times over or a four-round fighter, to step inside that ring, you have to have guts" Oscar De La Hoya

Are they comparing Oscar to a punching bag? i beleive Mayorga is the punching bag. In the words of Emmanuel Stewart "this guy cant fight" Mayorga that is.

only thing that could happen is that if Mayorga's stamina is in top shape, he'll lose by decision

Mayorga successfully KOED, Forrest, and Sixheads.
    Mayorga successfully dropped Tito.

    All with his right hand.

ODh has been running a string of defeats. Hopkins, Sturm (he was given a gift), and Mosely.

Mosely made a comment as to the difference between a 147 lb Oscar vs a 154 lb Oscar. Mosely said the 154 lb Oscar didn't have power. A lot of people will counter this by saying Oscar TKOED Vargas, but least us not forget Tito, Rivera all KOED or dropped Vargas.

All things being held equal. Mayorga has a punchers chance in this fight. And if the soft body Oscar that fought Sturm, and Hopkins come to fight, he will be quickly put out of his misery by wild swinging Mayorga.

The only way Oscar can win this fight, is if he boxes Mayorga like the way Corey Spinks did him. Pure slickness. Can ODH outslick Mayorga. Yes. Will he? Maybe not, since Mayorga has gotten into his head.

But I am patiently waiting for Mayorga land that BOOOOOOOM right hand on Oscar and have him back peddling for the rest of the night.

we shouldnt be talking about "the only way oscar can win" beacause hes by far the classier and most versatile fighter. this reminds me of the fight with vargas. de la hoya silencing the trash talker. the only way mayorga can win is if one of his wild swings connects.

Ali physically looked like his younger days before he fought holmes.

I sense what Teddy Atlas does about DLH. And I have yet to see DLH be slick, or even close to as slick as Cory Spinks had to be. What Oscar could do was use his height to his advantage and keep you at the distance he wanted you at. But ever since the Vargas fight the ODLH that I have seen is a stander and a waiter, who waits for you to get into range, he WAITS for you instead of his younger years where he'd force you to a range, and now once you're in that range he flurries and gets away. This is NOT the ODLH that DLH has to be in order to beat Mayorga. But it has been the DLH I have seen since Vargas
