Fighters get a cut for every PPV buy. So it's impossible for a fighter to know his total earning before hand. I'm thinking Mick phrased it wrong

A fighter is told he will earn 'X' amount + PPV & merchandising (depending on how it's been worked out).
Right. So, does it benefit a fighter (economically) to actively engage in the promotion to increase the PPV sales? To be controversial? To be loud and obnoxious and to play up a "bad guy" persona if it will generate more PPV sales?
Can a guy have control over his own income by doing that?
