Unless things have changed in the last few years, they still have ref's scoring fights in the UK. As for the "good old days of boxing" in the states, to the best of my memory, they have always used judges to score fights. (Could be wrong, as I am not 200 years old yet) but for as long as I have been watching fights (early 60's) there has been judges at every fight doing the scoring.

I didn't know either until I saw Nigel Wright vs Lenny Daws for the British title at light welter and as soon as the final bell rang the commentator started shouting '...and its a DRAW!!'. I thought 'how the fuck does he know so soon??' lol..but he'd obviously looked at the refs hand signal
