The Ring is pleased to announce that world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather has been selected as Fighter of the Year for 2007. Mayweather fought twice in ’07, winning a 12-round decision over Oscar De La Hoya on May 5 in Las Vegas to capture the WBC super welterweight title, and knocking out Ricky Hatton in the 10th round on December 8 in defense of the world welterweight championship.

It is the second time Mayweather has won the honor, having also been The Ring’s 1998 Fighter of the Year. The award dates back to 1928, when heavyweight champion Gene Tunney was the first recipient.

Well deserved honor for Mayweather
the event of the year was HATTON mayweather. Good to see theres no bias from the rings new owner in making these awards.
I would say De La Hoya Mayweather was the EVENT of the year. It was a ''superfight''. Although not the best match this year I think it deserves event of the year. Hatton Mayweather is close though.
I think the fact that Mayweather beat a 154lb legend in DLH and an undefeated Ricky Hatton coupled with the fact that he was involved in 2 of the biggest events of the year make him the fighter of the year with Pavlik an extremely close 2nd for the opponents he steamrolled this year.
