Default Here is a Dumb Question maybe some UK members can help me with???

The UK is a pretty big place....Why is it that boxrec has some fighters listed as United Kingdom for a nationality......Now I am not a geography wiz but the UK consist of England, Isle Of Man, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland?....If I left anything out I apologize.....

So even though it is all part of the UK aren't people still considered English (or British), Scottish, Welsh and Irish?....

I know boxrec is a bit off at times but was just curious to see if maybe I was mistaken.....

Or is it possible they just know the fighters are from the UK and not sure what part so they listed them as United Kingdom as their nationality....

CC's for any input on this

well i do know this, when a sportsman is doin well and he english we call him english, but if someone from Wales, Scotland or N. Ireland is doing well we will then label them British..

The Welsh, Scottish and N. Irish hate that fact!

Yes I agree everybody is considered British who live in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales i.e. Joe Calzaghe when really he is Welsh, but they don't like it the scots etc and I don't know if you know Wales have their own language BTW.

Not being fussy there is one country you missed out which is the Isle Of Man. A small Island situated between England and Ireland. If you look at a map of the UK you should see it a tiny piece of land, and my Mum's cousin lives there and you can easily get the ferry over from Liverpool. But that won't produce any decent boxers lol.

LOL Australia does that with sportsmen AND actors.. If they visit and say they like the place, we try to claim them as Australian. God forbid they stay here for a month.... Then they're as good as 'born' here...

I've always said, if your an illegal immigrant and locked up in a detention centre,,,, train yourself to run the 100 metres in under 10 seconds and our government will give you immediate citizenship and presidential treatment until the next olympic games...

Also part of the confusion is a guy may train and live one place when he's training but have been born somewhere else, and still maintain a house there
    Calzaghe comes to mind there
Of course I allways wondered when they listed Lennox Lewis's nationality if it should have an asterik next to it that said "This Week,As Far As We Know"

Actually, I did notice that boxrec has actually changed the way in which it organises fighters and events in terms of the British Isles over recent years. Up until fairly recently, they did actually put events in the schedule as either England, Scotland, Wales or NI, with the respective flags.

Recently they've moved to refer to all of it as British. Bascially, on all our passports we're British (much to many people's chagrin). Most of boxrec's listings have fighters organised via Town/City, Region/Country, United Kingdom.

However, I have noticed when trailing back through historic fighters, they do sometimes only have them by the UK nationality, and not by region.

Hope I've muddied the issue for you.

Pretty much clears it all up...thanks Rhun....Like I said I was wondering if it was a boxrec thing or was it how the nationality was recognized reguardless of which part of the UK....EG- Here in the States Hawaiians actually consider themselves Hawaiian not American..though they are proud US citizens

Technically they're British, but they pretty much govern themselves I think.
