The Democratic Party got shaken up by Johnson for signing the Civil Rights Act of 1968 it subsequently broke into 4 factions and Johnson's faction was the smallest consisting of mainly labor unions.
The 4 factions:
Johnson and Humphrey - Labor Unions and the establishment of the DNP (a mainstay of the Democratic party)
Eugene McCarthy - intellectuals and students (a huge part of the party to this day)
RFK - Catholics and Blacks (once again, another huge part of the Democratic party)
George Wallace - the "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever" folk who were the Southern Democrats and eventually became Republicans. Here's an interesting fact STROM THURMOND old time racist and South Carolina congressman started out his career as a Democrat.
So you can make excuses for Johnson and then do blurring the facts (what you accuse me of doing) on Nixon.....he was not worried about polls in 1973 he was worried about WATERGATE! Nixon resigned in 1974
