Surely 'god' would have used something more enticing than apples to tempt them with. Candy floss or doughnuts or something maybe.

"Apples"

I don't think we are ever told that the fruit that Adam and Eve ate were apples. It was the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The temptation was not just the fruit, but the ability to know what God knows.
God was not the one doing the tempting, either, although He allowed it. If you want to read a great story about real temptation, try the book of Job.
Temptation is not just to try to get people to do something wrong. Our trials are to see if we will stay with God no matter what, and He never allows the trials to be more than we can bear, as long as we do stick with Him. Job lost everything he had, but never turned his back on God, although he did question Him about why these things were happening. In the end, Job passed the test, and was given twice what he lost. Just something to think about.

thank you for that insight....
FYI on the simpsons, the fruit was a red apple and Ned was god so that's why i thought it was an apple. My mistake.
How come we are never told what the fruit is? To make it feel like a cliffhanger or just because it's irrelevant?
What's the book of job and where would i find it?
Is it fiction or non fiction?
Thanks
