I think he was great, just not as great as a lot of people think, i.e I don't think he is an all time top 10 p4per. I know it means nothing now, but had the 1st Hearns fight been 12 rounds Leonard would've lost a very clear decision, although I do give him massive credit for stopping Hearns eventually.

I think the fact that he did not seem to love the game like some other fighters and was always either threatening to retire or actually retiring and then making a comeback didn't exactly indere him to people
