Yeah, Smoger is the best out there. Why ? Because unlike other ref's he can't be tricked. So MANY ref's get tricked into stopping a fight when they shouldn't. Calzaghe, Amir Khan and Roy Jones do this by just throwing a flurry of punches that aren't really hurting the guy but the ref just panics and stops the fight.
Smoger lets things go, the classic example is in the Pavlik-Taylor fight. A lot of ref's would stopped that in the 2nd but he let go on and we seen what happened. Jay Nady is a joke and he looks scared of fighters. Joe 'I'm firm but I'm fair' Cortez is ok though.
Cortez has slipped a little. He used to be very good, but he misses a lot of things now. He still has good timing over when to stop a fight and he usually doesn't impose his presence on a fight more than necessary. I thought he did a pretty lousy job with the Hatton/PBF fight. The point deduction on Hatton was stupid and uncharacteristic, but he's still better than Nady.
Another ref does come to mind in who I am starting to like.It is Michael Ortega another that comes to mind and to me is the greatest ref ever is Frank Cappucino.Although Frank won't be around to much longer I like Ortega alot he let's fighter's in-fight.Which I think is a lost art in the sport do to a$$hole$ who like to be a judge like Nady,Bayless,Cotton,Neuman and talk to the fighter's like they've just commitited a crime.Say what you will but Mills Lane did ruin Refereering in a way as he would do after the penalty has occured then stop the action and talk with the fighter for a minute on how bad that low blow was etc.
yea i think cortez has slipped up as well.. I think he took what he knew about the two fighters and made his determination on what he was going to do way before the fight started...he was quick to break up the action
