i personaly wouldn't go for the long step,
cuz during that long step you can not adjust, and after that long step you rear foot also needs to travel alot to get back in position.
so when you make that long step, it is easy for the taller person to step back or side, to keep the distance, and your standing there in a need to get in position while eating his doubled/tripled up jab.
so its better to counter during, or just after that slip, to disrupt his attack, and then you work his body and head for as long as you have the chance to stay inside.
