If that was the Richard Zednik incident from about a week ago, his teammates skate came up and cut his carotid artery. He's been released from hospital by now I think. He was smart enough to immeaditly skate towards his bench. Apparently he passed out in the tunnel on the way out of the rink from blood loss while they waited for an ambulance.
Something similar happened to goalie Clint Malarchuk about 10-15 yrs ago, his jugular got slit and the only reason he survived is that a member of the training staff had been a medic in Vietnam and he managed to hold the vein closed with his fingers until paramedics arrived. Malarchuk said his only thought was to get off the ice so his mother didn't have to see him die as she was watching the game.
A neck guard wouldn't do jack shit, those skate blades are as sharp as razors. Kevin Bieksa, who plays defense for the Vancouver Canucks (my team) has a skate blade cut through his hockey sock, through the light amount of padding, and sever his achilies tendon I think it was earlier this year. That stuff would have been as thick, or thicker than a neck guard, plus hockey players need to be able to look down into their feet to see the puck.
One thing they're talking about is making visors on helmets manditory, but the players don't want that either. Sami Salo, another Canuck, has his nose and cheek bone shattered by a puck earlier this year as well, in the same game as Bieksa's injury.
Getting cut by skates is not that common though, just freak occurances.
