The gym put up a speedball on the mount today. Absolutely no one could use it properly. One of the coaches was having a go at another coach for ordering a ball that was too small.
The head coach in the gym told me he wants me to try and turn pro within 2 years and to skip amateur. I havent even sparred yet FFS!! I think he is getting carried away. Some boxers around my level will be in the gym on monday night for my first time sparring.

7 or 8 rounds on the speedball. First time I have tried it. Fuck me its hard. My trainer is opening the gym an hour early for me on thursday so he can give me a proper lesson on it. Which is nice of him

2.5 rounds on the mitts. Practicing a combination to keep a fighter trapped in a corner. The combination was jab, straight, left hook, straight- step jab, straight, step, jab, straight, left to the body, straight, step, jab straight, jab, straight, left upper, right upper, left hook ,right hook, step, jab, straight. Good log
LOL, I was reading the early posts and there's one where you mention pain in your shin after skipping, told myself this guy will get shin splints if carries on quite hard, then a couple posts later you say it. Anyway, how are they now? I used to have them myself, bloody miserable when you're willing to put the hours in and your body won't let you.
Cheers for the reply.
I have a mate who used to be a good hurdler and he had bother with shin splints so he told me about 3 good stretches to do before and after training. Seems to be working quite well.
I can usually feel a slight twinge in my left shin around the 4th round of skipping and sometimes my right calf tightens up when shadow boxing, but not nothing significant.
I played football for years and never had a problem with my shins. I think my physique tends to lend itself to shin splints. I am kind of short and stocky with big thighs so I am more of a bull in a china shop than a slick fighter and if I am on my toes a lot it tends to be slightly wearing on my legs and stamina levels.
Good to hear.
My shin splints turned into much less of a bother after using better footwear for running and losing a lot of weight after boxing for a while.
Back to the gym recently after a massive lay off.
I went a couple of times at the end of December but I cant remember what I did so I will leave those out.

The speedball has disappeared so no practice on that lately.
My normal trainer wasnt in the gym the other night, and another coach changed my footwork a bit. He refused to let me put my backfoot on the floor at anytime, and he also moved me further from the double end bag in order to improve my technique when throwing straight punches.
My coach also had me trying to slip both sides after throwing straights on the double end bag. Slipping to my left is ok, but I am still a bit stiff and awkward when slipping to my right.
Also, a few days ago. a fighter from another gym came for a sparring session and brought a mini entourage. Him and our fighter absolutely tore into each other, it was an absolute war. All the pros and coaches were bellowing instructions, and the sparring session was intense to say the least.
The lad from the other gym got the best of it (even though he looked about 16 and wore plimsoles) and the session got stopped at the end of the second as our bloke got a cut over his right eye.
Ive seen plenty of sparring sessions between pros on video, whilst I am aware that the camera sanatises it a little, these two lads were going at it much harder than any sparring session I have ever seen.
Today was snowing and absolutely freezing in Osaka.
I had a bit of a tight chest and felt a bit of cold coming on but decided to go to the gym at 11 am.
3 rounds skipping. I couldnt do more than 30 seconds without tripping. I think my body was trying to tell me something.
Spent 2 rounds working on my footwork moving around the ring.
2 rounds shadow boxing.
1 round heavybag. Started to feel knackered
4 rounds on the mitts. QUite a leisurely pace. MY trainer had me working on throwing combinations to get out of the corner. He knew I was sick so kept it at a slow pace.
4 rounds heavybag. By now my chest was heaving and i was like an asthmatic pit pony.
2 rounds double end bag. Felt knackered, praacticing double jabs and straight rights and slipping punches, very slowly.
Felt terrible afterwards. I should have listened to my body and stayed in bed. I did myself no good by going to the gym today!!!
Back to the gym today after a massive bout of flu.
Its still affecting my asthma a bit.
3 rounds skipping
3 rounds shadow boxing
4 rounds on the heavybag
2 rounds on the mitts, doing hook and uppercut combinations.

My trainer has been praising my work on the mitts lately, which is nice. My combinations are more fluid and my balance has improved, apparently.
Still had some breathing problems, hopefully I will be 100% tomorrow or the day after.

2 rounds on the mitts
2 rounds on the heavybag

No skipping today, there is still a bit of a twinge in my shins,
Had a different trainer work me on the mitts. Preferred it with him because my usual trainer holds the mitts in a weird position and sometimes its hard to catch the mitt sweetly.
