He's a limited fighter who is only in the position he's in because he has a big fanbase. He's the Irish JCC junior.
Facing an opponent-type fighter on Saturday he could easily have lost the bout had he not been the home fighter.

....well his being Irish might draw in some fans but if he was hispanic he would still have fans.
Arturo Gatti had the biggest group of devout fans in boxing when he was fighting and his last name might be Italian and he's from Canada, but it didn't stop fans of all backgrounds and colors to enjoy what he did.
John Duddy is liked as a fighter because of the way he fights

I'm sure there are plenty fighters just as good as him that have never even made it out of Mexico. Look at the guy Duddy was fighting, a Tunisian immigrant to Canada. We'd never heard of him and never will again but in terms of excitementhe was at least Duddy's equal on Saturday night. Let's face it, who landed most of the big punches ?
....anyone of any background that makes their way on to cards at the Garden with Duddy's type of style will have a huge following.
Duddy isn't ONLY popular because he's Irish...it's because of his style. Look at Arturo Gatti he fought the same way, no defense, cut up like someone took a knife to him, and yet he pulls off a win....his style adds drama to the fight.
Look at Edison Miranda he fights virtually the same way....only he has crazy power but the fans love his style...he's not Irish, he's not even American.
Sure there are plenty of fighters as good or better than Duddy but Duddy draws the crowds....he puts asses in seats....you do the math

...I guess we agree
Sometimes why people like or dislike a certain fighter isn't clear but people certainly love John Duddy....he has the attitude where he is stubborn and will only win one way and that's with true grit and guts.
Sure he isn't the classic boxer but he's blood and guts....he'll be outmatched soon enough but what's not to like with Duddy?

First you say that Duddy wouldn't be as famous if he was Mexican then you bring up JCC jr. thats a bad arguement my friend. Lets move on man your attempt to pull the race card has been revoked...I should have expected as much from a guy with a Kirkland Laing avatar......

I dont think Kirkland was trying to pull the race card at all. He was telling the truth. There are a lot of guys out there with more skill and just as entertaining as Duddy that we have never heard of. That dont get posted about. That dont magically fall into contention for title shots. Why is this?
Cuevas made him look bad. An ancient Yory Boy gave him problems. He barely squeaked by Eastman. He even made Bonsante look good at times. And now he gets the shit beat out of him by a 17-3-3 chubby guy. Duddy has proved nothing other then he has a good pain tolerance. And he was being considered an opponent for Pavlik why?
He's a nice, down to earth guy. I like him. But don't act like he hasnt been favored for one reason or another. He's gotten further in his career because of his looks then anything he's done in the ring and that's a fact.
Well he fights in New York a city with big Irish roots and his style is pleasing to watch. So he has a pleasing style for the fight fans that like brutal fights and he has a large forum in which he can showcase his talents or lack of talents.
Any other ethnic group would support him if he was of a different ethnicity...New York is a melting pot.
And he's a fun fighter to watch....who cares if he's Irish.
....but he does fight like an Irishman, stubborn and tough

He's like Gatti, he's pleasing to the people who don't truly follow or understand boxing. He just fights in an exciting manner.....and there is a large population of his countrymen or their descendants where he fights.
Cuban, Mexican, Russian and fighters from any other country get similar kinds of support.
When you don't know who is fighting and you're just the average guy, you might be inclined to "cheer for the ____ guy" because you are ____ and you want to have some pride in your ethnicity, race, country, religion, or whatever.
So it's probably just dumb luck that John Duddy became so popular and it's his ability to draw crowds and keep winning that has moved him up the rankings

I'm 38 and I come from Sunderland, England. I'm pasty white due to the hours I work and I narrowly avoided being ginger, the ginger gene being rampant in my family. When I was growing up Kirkland laing was my favourite fighter. There was no intention to be disrespectful to either Mexican or Irish people. Half my family originally came from Ireland and I own a house and have friends there. You're reading an awful lot into a pseudonyn. It might not be me with the racism issues.
