Amateur's affecting Boxing detrimentally.

While at an amateur tournament during the weekend I pondered the effect of the amateur computer scoring on boxing.

As any informed boxing fan will already know, the computer system rewards only cleanly landed punches, disregarding any other style or technique and removes the emphasis on power and stoppages.

My question was this; Does the amateur game nowadays, actually hinder a fighters progression into the pro ranks?

The system encourages the fighter to reduce his volume of punches in favour of fewer more accurate punches. It also makes elaborate defnces and movement worthless. It encourages the use of punches with little power and liberal use of the solitary jab...


What say you guys

I guess this is why I like Puerto Rico's mentality. They train their fighters to fight as pros this way the transition is not that big of a jump when it's time to turn pro.
I honestly can't watch amatuer fights because I am used to watching pros. I watch an amatuer fight and I feel like I am in wonderland and lost like a mother freckle. Then again, I watch a proffesional heavy weight fight and I suddenly get very sleepy

Well I don't enjoy watching amateur boxing If I don't know the fighters personally as I feel that they have adapted the sport so much that it has become a different sport.

Hi my friend hitmandonny, Do you have some familia in amateur boxing? Well i do , i have a nephew that now is prospect for the olimpics , not now but maybe for the next and i want to say that i realy enjoy it watching him and other kids , the point is the way that you look at it , because when you see a kid that inspire to reach there goal that is beatyfull man....and i undertand what you saying in the thread , because i know that i amateur boxing you can see a good prospect for the future and other that go just for be part of the team......But that happens in every sports , righ?

I actually box in the amateurs myself Macho, I'm not an Olympian prospect, I've got an obvious Professional style.

I agree completely, I guess that the amateurs are necessary step for kids getting involved in the sport and as such are of vital importance. So yes, you are perfectly correct mate.

It's almost like they are two different sports altogether. I think amateurs are great for building the boxing skills up, but there's so much more open area in the pros,so if you can do good boxing at amateur your bound to be better with more to work with. As far as power, stamina, chin, heart those things are needed in the pro's moreso so you may not be working on those areas where you can improve them.
