We started at the same time but never met, nearly did once early doors. Joe is a fantastic guy with a great sense of humour and would always have fun putting himself down. One of the good guys and very underated top fella.

Joe Bugner was often too defensive minded and i do question how much his heart was actually in boxing. But when he was at his best he could be a handful as Joe Frazier found out. I remember Frazier decking Bugner in round 9 or 10 with a massive left hook, then Bugner actually got up and wobbled Frazier at the end of the round, and he wobbled Frazier quite a few times in the fight as well. That was probably Bugner's finest performance and it was a great fight and often overlooked classic IMO. I haven't seen Cooper vs Bugner but i heard to ref was biased and that Bugner won a very controversial decision maybe Scrap can tell us about that fight. But Bugner was tough and gave some of the elite fighters of the 70s a good fight he fought Lyle to a SD loss he also went the distance with Ali x2. He also outboxed good fighters like Greg Page, Jimmy Ellis, James Tillis, etc. Overall i think Bugner could of been better had his heart really been in boxing but still a good tough fighter who done very well in 70's considering how strong the Heavyweight division was at the time.
On his best day, I cant think of any British Heavy Id pick to beat him if Im honest![]()
