Something that might be helpful, my older sister taught me to drive when I was 12, she would either take me to a large cemetary during the day, or a large housing development late at night, and she would let me drive there, because there would be the least amount of traffic or pedestrians to worry about hitting. So you may want to try the large cemetary to start practicing in, it was a perfect place to go, because you have to go slow, and there usually aren't any hard turns or anything. I took both of my kids to a big warehouse parking lot on a Sunday and let them drive until they got tired. I think it's better for them to learn on a stick because they will be able to drive any vehicle once they know how to drive a standard transmission.
