    Default I hate bed time.

Don't know what my problem is but for a few years now I dread turning the lights out. I just lay there and think about everything that isn't going right.

But if it's the middle of the afternoon or early evening, I have no trouble at all taking a nap.

Turning the lights out at bed time.. I dunno... I get lonely. It's too dark. It feels so.... FINAL. So then I just get up and wander the house for an hour or two. In the meantime, the wife is and the boy is .

I have found a cure. Take 2 sleeping pills and drink two beers.

I kinda know what you're going through, I have problems sleeping as well. Ever since my mom passed away I have been utterly paranoid when it comes to turning out the lights and going to sleep. I'm convinced something bad is going to happen while I sleep, or that I just won't wake up. It's got so bad that when I feel I am drifting off I almost equate it with dying and find myself forcing myself to wake up. It's very strange, I seem to fall asleep best by having it creep up on me these days.

I like it when I've trained enough to be physically and mentally tired by the time I go to bed. Then I really appreciate sleep and nod off pretty quickly.

I'm also in habit of thinking about something comforting like lying on the beach on a tropical island etc etc to help myself sleep.

Do you get this feeling on days when you've trained?

    Hey Von,
I completely understand what you're feeling and it may be down to some unresolved issues causing you stress.
Sharla raises a great point in saying that physical exertion can help with this. You know yourself it releases endorphins and tires the body so it can really trigger sleep.

I hate bedtime as well but maybe for a different reason..

I think I have some sort of fatigue problem as i'm usually tired most of my day.. All day at work when i'm nearly falling asleep I say to myself "go to freakin bed early tonight!!".
But at night time, I know that as soon as I turn the lights off and go to sleep, the next thing I know i'll be hearing my alarm and having to get up for work all over again... So I just can't bring myself to go to bed at night.. I'll just stay up watching pointless television, or put a movie on at 12pm... My work performance surely sufferes from going to sleep at 2am most nights and getting up at 7am, but I feel like i'm completely wasting MY spare time if I just go to sleep when I could be up doing something...

Not quite the same as you, but it's definetly a dilemma in my life also..
To sleep or not to sleep. That is the question!

    interesting thread!

i always had a phobia of being harmed or even killed once i fell asleep.

for example im a pretty big dude and a pretty good fighter i can definitely defend myself, but when im asleep i am defenseless.

i would not even be intimidated if robbers came into my home while i was awake, but asleep is a totally different story.

anybody feel what i am talking about?

This is a very interesting topic. Falling asleep is a serious issue for me. It just doesnt happen very easily. I work very erratic hours and find it hard to get a balanced quota of sleep. I have a terrible tendency to use sleeping pills just to knock myself out because otherwise I will go to bed really late and I know I need to be up early in the morning. Not cool really. Bed time is a time riddled with anxiety for me. And of course I can never sleep well because of the bongo truck drivers who sell their onions first thing in the morning with their speakers on full blast. My wife is always ready for bed at the same time every day but I just cannot get myself into that mode. Seems to be some timer system inside that is just off. Or else there is some button in the brain that just doesnt know how to swith to off.

pretty sure it's your circadian rhythm that is the "timer system".. it's like a 24 hour cycle of your body and i think it's associate with day and night.. so you may just have to try to break your bad habit (rhythm) and force yourself to sleep early making it your new rhythm.. that's basically what i did this semester with all of my 8 o clock classes.. never in my life have i had to get up mon-fri that early, so it took a lot of getting used to and i still have at least 2-3 nights out of the week that i go to bed at 2am.. But the funny thing is that on the weekends when i sleep in i find myself getting up at something like 9am instead of my normal sleeping in mode time of 12pm heh.. it's all relevant..

excellent point sharla, i was going to reply to the original thread starter with what you said.. I try as hard as possible to get cardio in every day and run til i'm exhausted, and make sure i don't nap at ALL during the day so that i can fall asleep at night..

the only time i've had a panic attack bad enough that i felt i needed to go to the ER (even though they can't do anything) was when i was just lying in bed.. my thoughts just got the better of me i guess..

anyway, my advice would be to NOT nap during the day, regardless of how tired you are, because not only will that throw off your rhythm, but it will also make you less tired at night.. or so it seems..

Recently I brought a heavy schedule upon myself. I even stopped posting here as much because I just had no time for anything. Ive cancelled a significant amount of work so Im down to 3 days a week now but still a bit crazy. First class at 10am and the final one finishing at 11pm. I have a break in the afternoon but of course im in no mood for sleeping. I work that over 3 days Monday, Thursday and Friday. I get home and Im in no way ready for bed. Just want to have something to eat and unwind somehow. Then of course I have a beer over the weekend and that gets me to sleep just fine and then of course I wake up late and struggle to get to bed at a decent time the next night. A silly cycle that needs to be fixed really.

Im seriously thinking of just finishing out my contracts and then taking the end of year off of work completely. There is more to life than work....and that is a decent nights kip!!

i lay awake mostly because I can't find a job. All these years busting my ass and for what? I've applied to probably 75 jobs in the past 6 months, and not a single fucking phone call.

Sharla, right now there are no good gyms near me that I can afford. There's a nice one in Niagara Falls that was started by Billy "The Kid" Irwin, but it's $50/month. In normal times, no problem, but right now, not an option.

so I just sit there and stew about no work and no prospects, and the fact that I have school shit to do.

Plus I worry about the N. American economy. It's f'd. We're in DEEP trouble over here.

Try wacking or getting laid before going to sleep.

Im sorry to hear about your diffficulty finding work. Worry is something that never goes hand in hand with a peaceful nights sleep. I really hope something comes your way soon enough. Good luck!!

Yes looking for work sucks (perhaps worse than having to go to work itself). For every job you get denied, it means there's a better one out there. Just keep fillin' in those job applications, you'll find a job soon.
