IMO the fact he had little power, made him the superb fighter he was. If he had power he would of been incline to trade more with his opposition, which would of been very dangerous, as he had a soft chinOriginally Posted by Syntax Error
Pernell had one of the greatest Chins of all time. And he had Power when he needed it.
Anyway, I think people are overlooking that Pernell was a southpaw. And Floyd has trouble with Southpaws.
Pernell would beat Lil Floyd, and would do it in style.
Oh, I forgot about Gary Jacobs' 'Shaveresque' powerOriginally Posted by Purist
Whitaker had a soft chin, and when he was caught, he went down; Mayweather, Jacobs and Vazquez all showed this when Whitaker was resembling something like his prime form.
Anyone can get caught on a flash, look Aaron Pryor.

Pernell had a great chin.
The difference is Pryor stood up to everything Arguello could throw at him, Whitaker hit the deck against featherfisted Gary Jacobs, not to mention the only slightly more respected Vazquez.Originally Posted by Purist
And I saw a near prime Chavez soak up everything the Black Mamba could throw at him, yet Mayweather decked a near prime Whitaker.
I stand by my statement, Whitaker had a soft chin.
Sweet pea woulda made a fool outta PBF.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"
Whitaker by decision in his prime would have pissed off Floyd. He would definitely outbox pretty boy.
I'm to join this so late but I felt I had a contribution. No doubt "Sweet Pea" was one sweetest, purest boxers there ever was. His ability to get below offenses was phenomenal. As far as pure boxing ability and speed "Sweet Pea" never faced anybody like the "Pretty Boy" who great mix of speed and power. I think "Sweet Pea's" master defensive skills, rivalled only by the "Pretty Boy" i might add, would keep him out of trouble. I see this going to Mayweather by majority decision.
Vinnie
This would be a really close fight and possibly warrant a rematch but I think Sweet Pea would have pulled off a split decision win. Wouldn't be suprised if this ended up in a triliogy.
both are all time favorites of mine.
ill take mayweather by ud regardless of who wins the fight (pernell has been on the wrong end of a couple of the biggest robberies of all time)
This would make for an unbelievably great scientific and technical fight; one for the ages. Too bad we cant get a time machine together and make it happen. Mayweather is hands down the best I've seen in a long time, skillwise, strategywise and otherwise. Maybe since I saw Julio Cesar Chavez rob a young black fighter who clearly handed him his first loss in nearly a hundred bouts. Chavez was given a draw because of the fear that the thousands of hispanic people in the pro mexican arena would riot should the other man be given the decision he clearly one. Years and years later this man would fight a similar (yet much closer) fight against a young Oscar Delahoya at welterweight; another fight in which i believe the decision was erroneous. Two years ago I ran into this man at a club in Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA. I was sure to tell him that he was a legend and had beaten both Delahoya and Julio Cesar Chavez but had been robbed by the judges in both fights. That man was Pernell Whitaker. He is one of the few fighters who I believe had the speed, technique, strategy and skill to beat "Pretty Boy Floyd" in his prime. To win, Mayweather would really really have to impose his bigger size and reach against an opponent who would know just how not to allow him to do so. If Mayweather could catch him, it is possible he could stop Pernell. But he wouldnt catch him. No one in Whitaker's prime ever could. Pernell Whitaker wins by a close but unanimous decision, 7 rounds to 5.
Whi is this SWEAT pea guy anyway?
