Yes the ref did give Benn time to recover and he also let him get away with a lot of rabbit shots. But you still need to give credit where credit is due, Benn took one of the worst 1 sided beatings i've ever seen in a single round, yet he still comeback strong in the next round and gave McClellan a taste of his own medicine. That fight also basically finished Benn as a fighter that took a lot out of him.

Ice im not for one minute taking anything away from Nigel , he is one of my favorite british fighters , mainly for his power - heart and vulnarability , like my american hero Tommy Hearns , he had those 3 ingredients.
Benn showed his warrior spirt that night , but the ref did suck , and the result may have been different if he was a better ref , who knows.

Sounds Geyish.........Dont really give a fark. I love Nigel Benn. For as flawed as He was as a Boxer His intensity and desire in the ring was One of the key factors that Imbebed me as a dedicated Fan.Fought like I use to live life...Face first. From the first day I saw him live in the Dewitt Squabble followed by the Barkley scrap...(which had many a friend bashing him for "Cheating" and Me the only one in a roomfull of Drunken Americans rooting for him).

Nigel kind of got a bad rap after all this happened...I always found him to be a decent guy from what I have ever seen of him in interviews etc...He was a dangerous fighter that could end anything at anytime with 1 shot....It was his chin that was his biggest downfall...He was not really and overly skilled technical fighter by any means and IMO he relied on that power a bit too much like many guys with big power...Benn though was so strong it often left guys with greater boxing ability on the defensive so much and in fear of countering due to being caught by one of his swaring hooks they were taken out of their game all together...

    I was a fan

here is a decent little video of his career I found on youtube

Nigel prided himself on being a bad guy.

He had a verrry questionable youth, he was saved by the military and rumours abound to this day, of his shady connections

Donny if I made a list of fighters over the years that fit that profile it would take a week

I can't condone dirty tactics in the ring, I'm all for trying to win, but once you start putting other peoples health at risk to win.... I just remember countless times inside Benn would throw about 2-3 rabbit shots, ref did nothing. McClellan would be getting the upper hand and the ref would get in the way for some fucking reason. He broke them up alot in the first round when McClellan was trying to take him out..it was total bullshit. It was like the ref felt bad for Benn and was helping him. I get worked up every time I think of this fight...I'm done with this shit...I can't say with certainty that Benn did anything on purpose, I blame the ref more for just letting him do whatever.

Yes this was a stinker by the ref , but the worst performance i can think of by a ref is
Isaac Carrera , Thomas Hearns v Dennis Andries , he was a disgrace especially in the 6 th round , were i think he wanted Andries dead .

Andries too tough for his own good.He was bounced like a yo-yo there.Hearns was pretty nice moving up and retained his Tools In that one

Dark Lord Al I should not laugh, but just couldn't help myself with your wording re Hearns vs Andries ...

Priceless is that bud .... yet equally it's true, what on Gods earth was the ref doing .... I really could not believe what I was seeing....
