He actually had a somewhat plausible explanation for this in his post fight interview.

He said that his sparring partners for the fight were not short and did not fight like Curtis, so when he got in there on fight night he had no idea what do. So he did what he used to do in the amateurs when he fought a short good fighter: run around and keep his distance.

I am more willing to accept that excuse after his destruction of Hanshaw.
