I notice as a southpaw if I throw my jab upwards a little against an opponent it tends to allow my shoulder to block any hook that would hit me cleanly, and so the shots that would land would catch me off the top of the head which especially with headgear usually doesn't do much damage. One thing at least for me as a southpaw is its more awkward coming forward as a southpaw, and sometimes its good to use movement and counter while a taller opponent comes in, and obviously stay conscious of maintaining that lateral movement.
