Have you talked to your current boss to get a read on your departments situation, and ask him for his advice?

If you take the job in the other dept, and your current dept doesn't get fazed out, couldn't you go back to it?

Yeah, I guess I never thought about that... I mean, I wouldn't be burning any bridges although it would probably be looked at as strange...

The only people that know wouldn't tell me anyway... They're afraid of people jumping ship.

Well they probably think you're strange already, so what's the difference.

And it's not like you're jumping ship out of the company, just to a different department. If you tell them you're situation, and tell them that you would prefer to stay in your current position, but being able to support yourself has to come first, I think they would understand, and be honest with you.
