For example, Roberto Duran got stripped of his WBA belt at 154 for not facing his mandatory in Mike McCallum. Instead, he fought the more established, WBC champ in Thomas Hearns for more money. A duck? I think not.

Duran was supposed to fight Carlos Ortiz in a non-title bout at MSG, but his management (Carlos Eleta) told him no and pulled out, saying Duran was sick. Eleta also didn't want Duran to have a rematch with Ken Buchanan, or fight Antonio Cervantes at 140. Are these considered "ducks"? Buchanan later said something like "Duran would fight anyone but his management made the decisions".

Or what about Floyd Mayweather and Kostya Tszyu? Is Mayweather re-signing with HBO, the more powerful and lucrative network, considered a "duck"? Exclusive HBO and Showtime fighters don't fight each other unless it's something like Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson which generates $100 million in PPV revenue.

People always talk about Ray Leonard "ducking" Aaron Pryor because they watched Legendary Nights. Pryor "called out" Leonard at a press conference, but all the big names are going to get challenged. Fighters want to fight the big names. Does a welterweight champ have an obligation to fight a champ in a lower weight class, when the other champ hasn't done anything at welter?

What exactly is a fair definition/explanation of a "duck"?

When you're offered $8milion, a career high payday against the longest reigning champion in the division but you decide to take $5million fighting a lesser opponent. And then you change your name to money.

Oh and you retire on the eve of the 2 biggest names in the division fighting each other. That's pretty much the definition of duck that comes to my mind. Oh and you do all this and procalim to be the best at 147.

I find people going on about Joe and PBF ducking fights is ridiculous.

Start with Joe he is at the end of his career in his recent fights he has taken on the fights people wanted to see, how long can you keep taking on the new hottest contender, he has made no secret that he want to retire soon and in his last few fights he has taken on the dangerous young fighters (lacy and Kessler) and taken out the old guard. (Hopkins and hopefully Roy Jones) not a bad end to a career, but oh no there is a new young gun on the horizon two weight divisions lower who if he doesn't fight he is a "chicken shit turd" who's not worth shit!!

As for PBF he has now retired and if he hasn't he only has one fight left Cotto and Margarito are the two most exciting fighters at WW at the moment but lots can change in a year what if Margarito beats Cotto to then gets beaten by William's again would you all then be shouting for PBF to come back and fight William's otherwise he is an overrated pussy!!

My point is at the end of a fighters career who has has fought as well as these two have, they have both taken risks and achieved more than most, I don't mind if they finish off that career with a big fight that they want and dont take on every young gun on the scene till they get beat, they have earned it they have to retire some time

Idiots will always jump on a new bandwagon and say such and such a fighter is washed up because it makes them look more like a hardcore boxing fan but in truth both these fighters will go down as greats and shouldn't be accused of ducking anyone

Where did you get the $5 million figure from?

The reports I've read, from people whom I consider reliable (and some who despise Mayweather), had it at the same amount, $8 mil.
