The biggest thing that impresses me about berto is that he gets better and better each fight, and rarely repeat mistakes when he's focused and serious. He gets caught now and again cold and when he try's to showboat but outside of that he's pretty solid. It was hillarious to see dude get floored by that uppercut and say " woooooow" !! when he fell to the cavas that was one of the quickest punches i've seen an opponet have no chance of seeing let alone blocking. The kid is good.....simply put.

I worry about the fact that if I was managing Berto I would have kept him as a prospect for a few more fights. Sure he was handed a belt, but I don't think that he could beat any of the other WW title holders YET. I don't think he has one punch power, but he does have crisp punches that last until the later rounds which will by far and large will keep his KO% up.

I think he should fight Luis Collazo as his mandatory as he is the highest ranked in the WBC. And it should be an interesting fight to see if Berto can handle someone that has definate slickness.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

Collazo would be an excellent test - and a good gauge of where Berto is right now. I'm of the same mind as a lot of you guys, in that I think he has a lot of potential but still needs a bit of seasoning. Especially to compete with the elite at 147.

I never really got a gauge on how small he is for a welter. He's short stocky quick lil guy, but I'm not sold on this "power". I think someone with a good jab would be the next test, because he's gonna have to learn how to get inside and work against some of the bigger guys at ww.

Maybe you guys didn't see the uppercut he landed at the end, but he definitely hits hard. Even his right cross and left hooks were landing hard. I don't think he always tries to land hard, and he threw 300 punches in that fight so obviously he wasn't trying to take the guy out early. He was deadly accurate (52%), his defense has gotten a lot better, and he does have work to do, being as short as he does with as limited mobility as he does he needs to continue to improve a very good jab, and he needs to work the body A LOT more. THe problem with these extremely quick handed guys like him and RJJ is that he can land at will upstairs, but the only reason Cotto finishes half of his opponents is with the bodywork he sets it up with. Once again Berto isn't the hardest puncher in the world, but IMO he hits harder than Cotto at WW, and he hits harder than guys like Pavlik. Only time will tell. For now he needs to work on
    1. Keeping his hands up, or work on moving better
    2. Going to the body constantly
    3. Throw more punches, but always behind the jab.

He still is a prospect, winning a belt IMO nowadays doesn't mean your out of hte prospect realm. I think its when you've been a test worthy opponent that you step outside the prospect realm. I would prefer to see Berto fight a guy with a little more power(to force him to increase his defensive skills), and not a southpaw just yet. Right now Berto really realies on his jab, and a southpaw can totally negate that. Collazo is also really fast, and he has a great chin. I think Berto should fight a guy like Quintana before stepping in there with Collazo.

Quintana is also a southpaw, a lot more sound fundamentally then Collazo and I think would test Berto a lot more then Collazo would. Probably beat him imo.

He's not more fundamentally sound. Collazo has better technique than him, don't let Collazo's performance against Mosley deter you. I still think COllazo had a very good chance of beating Mosley had he not hurt his left hand, I mean after that he didn't throw anything, but judging by him against Hatton, he has great stamina, reflexes, and technique. Quintana is more likely to fold under pressure, he doesn't have great durability, he is slower, and yes he hits harder which I think Berto needs is a guy who's power he needs to respect.

Did you see ever see Collazo winning the belt against Rivera? He's definitely not a guy who deals with pressure all that well it's just that Hatton provided nothing but dumb aggression their fight.

Quintana neutralizes pressure a lot better then Collazo and he's not just a counterpuncher like he was against Williams, he can put together an attack moving forward a lot better then Collazo and most other welterweight contenders which is the big question for me.
