No i don't think so he shouldn't have hit him while on one knee but they weren't devastating shots Griffin milked it Jones should have lost some points.

Yeah I think definetely the fight was awarded the way it should have been.. If a fighter takes a knee, then there can't be any more punches thrown by the opponent...... Possibly if fighting was huddled in the corner and maybe a fighter couldn't see the knee, and it was pure accident, then there could be some dispute... There was no dispute there... Apart from being funny as hell on Roy's part, it was just plain wrong.......

    The rules are there :
    2nd to deter foul play.
1st to protect a boxers health.

When a boxer takes a knee, it becomes a health issue, and to purposly throw punches at that stage just has to be disqualified in my book..

To be truely honest, Montell fought brilliantly that fight compared to any of Roy's previous opponents. And actually went a fair way towards earning that win... Even though he was probably heading for a loss with the knockdown, no one had challenged Roy like that before...

If it was one of Roy's lesser opponents taking a knee in the first and Roy getting disqualified like that, then it would have been a lot worse..

Jones had never fought anyone as awkward as Griffin at that point in his career, and because Griffin was as awkward as Jones was, plus because Griffin was short as well made it hard for Jones to land punches, i can't remember what my scorecard was but it was probably even after 8 rounds with the knockdown, Jones in the rematch decided not to try and out box Griffin like he did the first time around, and just went out there and swarmed Griffin straight away and it worked.

Yea In Marciano's famous KO of Walcott, didn't Walcott gone down on one knee after being hit by the right hand ?? then Marciano KO'ed him with a left hook while Walcott was still on one knee.
Well when Walcott went down there was no way he was getting up, he was out cold slumpoed against the ropres.
But the hook put him face first into the canvas....Scary KO

Montell faked it and RJJ was unjustly disqualified.

I hate when boxers hit while their opponents are down.
Many times I've talked about this and how I feel about it.
Wilfredo Gomez got away with this a lot during his career.

The DQ on RJJ was OK on my books. So I would answer your question as yes he did deserve his 1st loss.

like has been said - Griffin milked it but yes Jones did deserve it

had he retired with just that one defeat though I believe he would still have been a man who retired unbeaten and that '1' would not have mattered.

As it happens Tarver and Johnson came along and rendered it insignificant.

Originally the result was Roy Jones winning via TKO. But they changed it to a DQ in the same night. Would have been better for Montell to lose that way. But changing it to a DQ just ended Montell's chances. and ultimately made Roy's legacy

The worst I've seen as far as hitting someone when their down goes was Nigel Benn against Iran Barkley. Benn knocked Barkley down 3 times in round 1 and each time threw punches after Barkley went down.

Even though I do think Griffen did a bit of an acting job, I think the DQ was justifiable.

But ohhh boy did Jones get his revenge.

    That was blatant.

    As was Marciano Walcott.

Griffin made a meal of it but yes Roy deserved to be DQ`d that was blatent.

Must add Perez was very slow to react.

In these situations i blame the ref for not getting in between them quick enough. In the heat of the moment, when the adrenaline is flowing and the guy who goes down, doesn't go down all the way, it's hard to blame the boxer who hits him. I've seen other fighters get hit, in similar situations, and not so much as a warning to the boxer who hit him. Inconsistent rulings.
