Roy Jones met many fighters in his prime who tried to out work him and you know what ?? they all failed because Jones was too good at countering, too quick, too strong, as soon as they felt his power they went right back on to the defensive and we are talking about fighters with iron chins. Theres no way on this earth a prime Jones Jr would lose to Calzaghe. Calzaghe has too many defense issues even a British commentator stated in the Richie Woodhall fight that Calzaghe has to seriously tighten up his defense, if he is even considering fighting Jones.
Dont agree he never fought anyone as active or with the stamina Calzaghe has. I think Roy would win but it would be close and hard fought. Montel Griffin in the first fight showed if you could keep pressure on him you could get at him due to his lack of activity.
And from 1994-2003 Roy Jones resume is a whos who of faded former fighters and bums, so as good as he looked in those fights you cannot possibly judge what he did to how he would do against a 2005 Joe Calzaghe.
Yeah I remember Ian Darke saying that cuz Joe was eating Richies right hand. He was taking alot from Reid too but orthodox fighters look for the right cross vs southpaws .
Anyways right now Joe is my favourite boxer but I have to admit that Jones in his prime was just too good. I think he may even be one of the greatest ever to lace up the gloves . Seriously .
If they met now though my money would be on Joe to outwork him and win on points . Jones tends to stand stiff with his hands high since he lost his reflexes. Dont think he can match Joe these days .
It hasn't ever been a problem. Which hurts Froch's chances even moreso because he'll have no idea how to deal with it when he gets in with Taylor and it's a HUGE one. Your basically saying the less experienced fighter isn't at a disadvantage because noone's ever hurt him before, or made him change his game plan. Well duh, that's the point. Taylor has been in with a magnitude of world class talent, and many different styles. He's been hit hard, and lost rounds. He's had to adjust and learn in the ring in basically every big fight he's been in. Froch has never met a single opponent he couldn't just plow over with looping telegraphed shots. Never had to even think about using any real ring craft. I see giving him a punchers chance against Taylor, but nothing more. It's obvious Taylor is the better fighter.
Taylor should dominate, but I wouldn't be shocked if it didn't come off. Read a newspaper article today about it and they seem determined to fight Lacy first.
Dont get me wrong i think Roy would have won but it would have been a GREAT fight.
But you cold say exactly the same thing for Froch that when he fights Taylor he can adapt to his style. Carl has made it clearly evident that he belongs with the world fighters and this is the step up he needs. Hes not taking any easy routes he is going straight for the best fighters and you will see hes ready for this step up IMO. I do thing skill wise Taylor is better and has more expereince. But this is 168 were the power is a lot more of a factor than merely just speed. Froch is powerful, more powerful than Taylor. Taylor shows when the going gets tough hes in for it. Carl knows how to apply decent pressure and I can really see Taylor getting tierd down the stretch like he has done in a lot of his fights recently. Froch aint no winky wright or Kasim ouma, if he sees a knock he isnt going to stop. If taylor can handle his pressure he has a good chance of winning, but hes going to get in trouble at least once in the fight, and I think that will be enough for Froch to finish him off.
Well i think hes made it pretty clear he is way above domestic and commonwealth class, and the top european fighter chicken'd out twice, therefore making him likely to be a contender in the top class. Hes undeafted and has a lot of stoppage wins and his performances suggest that he can handle the tougher fighters. I think we can say the same thing because Froch will be able to adapt to the better fighter although he hasnt had a chance to do it yet he will be able to cope with Taylor. You will see, trust me.
