I'm not sure if he's the #1 unluckiest, but Ike Quartey comes to mind.

    1. Got a draw against Jose Luis Lopez in a fight most thought he won.
    2. Signed for a big money fight against Whitaker, which got cancelled when Whitaker got arrested for drug possession.
    3. Lost a controversial decision to Oscar, a fight many people thought he won
    4. Got robbed against Vernon Forrest

Jorge Linares seems to be very under the radar and should receive more exposure.

In terms of being on the wrong end of decisions I would go with Glen Johnson. If we are talking about unlucky in terms of getting big fights, I would say all those Cuban boxers that never got their opportunity to turn pro. What a different history boxing would have if Cuba was included.

A few names to get going..

John Ruiz - He has had a lot of opportunities and yes he is not the best guy to watch but 5 of his 7 losses have been desperately close points decisions and he also has a draw. If those decisions had gone his way he could be a lot richer than he is an be held in a much higher light.

David Tua - Despite an impressive record of 49-3-1 he has only ever had 1 title shot

Glen Johnson - Lost so many fights he should have won, should be financially secure but still has to fight on at the age of 40

Vitali Tyspko - Robbed against Jeff Lacy a fight that could have lifted him into contention, also lost a desperately close decision against Chanet in his home town (France). Avoided fighter who is now running out of time at 32.

Josua Clottey - Only now at 31 is he finally getting some recognition, was beating Margarito until hampered by a hand injury and Disqualified against Baldomir his only two loses, 34-2 but only ever had 1 title shot.

Michael Jennings - 33-1 only loss by split decision, (debatable) never given an opportunity to step up in class despite being capable, now 30 years old and on the slide

Ajose Olusegun - One of the most talented guys around, but is just not being given the right fights, what for his name because as soon as he does he will shock the world, 28 needs a big fight before it is too late.

Sergio Gabriel Martinez - Record of 43-1-1 his only loss to Antonio Margarito, won an IBF eliminator back in April 07, since had 4 wins and still no title shot, currently on an unbeaten run of 27 fights, not lost in 8 years, one of the most avoided guys around.

Chris John - Unbeaten in 42 fights, beaten fighter such as Juan Manuel Marquez, but never even mentioned in any P4P lists, still not been given a big fight in the States

Gerry Pensola - Finally getting some recognition for the 35 year old 2 weight world champion 4 of his 6 losses were by split decision.
To be clear though, sometimes these fighters are not willing to meet half way and they spent most of the time fighting once a year waiting for the right opponent/money. Then they cry wolf that no one wants to fight them. Then you also have management/promoters who also are content with the fighters making them good money fighting the same type of fighters and making money off the name that they build locally.

I mean Chris John doesn't want to leave his backyard. JMM had to take his ass over there due to bad management also. So you see it's a mixture of several things.

David Tua, the opp. were there for him yrs. ago and he just never applied himself. Got careless and out of shape I think he just deflated after the Lennox lost cause after that he lost to Byrd, then he tried to rebuild and got a Draw with Hasim and after that yrs. had passed by and it wasn't the same. Inactivity.

I agree Mick most of these guys have themselves to blame. John included. Not all of them but a lot. Ruiz is a shit fighter and if he didn't give a certain amount of his purse to the sanctioning bodies he would never have sniffed more then a single title shot. I would consider him lucky to have had as many opportunities as he's had.

Clottey didn't lose because of his hand. May have contributed but he lost to the better fighter, that is one of the most overblown excuses in a single fight I have ever heard.

Martinez as far as I know has never signed with a promoter in his career. Given him a lot more keep and made him more financially secure but consequently has never had that big shot. He does deserve it though but if you want to work without a promoter you have to have a bigger name then his.

Winky Wright is unlucky but will still be remembered as great, no doubt. But for all intensive purposes he should be a 3 weight Ring Magazine champion imo. But he's made plenty of money and has been living the good life for quite a while since his globetrotting days.

I love Glen Johnson, but he knew the risks each time he stepped in another fighter's backyard. Much less after 2,3,4 or 5 robberies. He's got like 8 on his record. He knows the deal but he's a good guy and represents everything right about boxing in a way.

Sometimes I wonder when I read your posts how much boxing you've actually seen and how much you currently see.

You mean to tell me that you think that both JMM & Rafa are NOT 2 of the greatest fighters of this generation?

The 1st brother duo to be Top 10 P4P and the..... You know what?
Before I waste any time and text here. I'd would really like to read you supporting facts to this and why you feel that neither guy is a great fighter. Whenever your ready I'm all

Heres both guys records so you don't have to go to BoxRec and look them up. Let me know if you need to see any one of their fights and I'll gladly up load them for you.
