If you're Calzaghe you go to the US to fight Roy Jones Jr. at 175 earlier because #1 RJJ was the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world and #2 he was one of the most popular fighters in the world.
If he beat RJJ in like 1998-2000 then hell the sky is the limit but if he beats him now he does NOTHING for his legacy but if he loses then he shows he really was a protected fighter...Kessler is good but was still green when he fought Joe much like Jeff Lacy was although Mikkel had better fundamentals.
Calzaghe said neither Hopkins nor Jones wanted to fight him, in Hopkins case we know this to be true with Jones we can only assume it to be true.
Look at the guys Roy was fighting 1998-2002 why would you take the risk in fighting Calzaghe who at the time held nothing when you could beat up on cans for the same?
Facts are Calzaghe was not known in the US HBO would not go for it and he also had nothing for Jones or Hopkins to fight for no name no marketability nothing.
That of course changed when Joe beat Lacy because he was introduced to a US audience in a big way and immediatly drew attention from both Showtime and HBO who prior had never shown a Calzaghe fight live.
As for Kessler being green the guy was a great amature won two world titles and had 39 fights, if thats green in a Chinaman.
