I agree, I can understand watching it as it happened. But showing that montage of Cotto bloody and the family in tears was a bit odd.
my sense on the matter when it happened was that HBO was simply trying to be melodramatic (and i guess with this particular footage they had time to burn). in another thread, i pointed out how HBO is generally melodramatic; in other words, they spend a lot of precious time and words hyping what needs no hype, thus both insulting our intelligence (and devotion to the sport) and distracting us from the fight. by the way, all this talk about puerto rico versus mexico is a perfect example of this utter bullshit. this was a tremendous event between two specific athletes, cotto and margarito, not some bullshit part IV of some hollywood movie. this holds regardless of whether many puerto ricans and mexicans do emphasize to themselves some enduring rivalry.
what HBO needs to do is drop kellerman, drop the old drunk (i forget his name), drop buffer (i remember there was a thread on buffer vs. lennon; i couldn't believe how many preferred buffer--the professional wrestling-like used car salesman announcer--to lennon), and just have steward and/or an intelligent boxer, and keep the play-by-play (Lampley) on a short leash.

I didnt see any of this. I watched the British coverage . So basically HBO tried to embarass Cotto by showing all the worst parts .
I heard Cotto gave Tony props . Was that at the post fight presser then ?
HBO should be ashamed they sucked Cottos balls all fight they praised Cottos shots yet chose to speak over Margaritos good work.
Was sad to see.
Jim Lampley is the worst announcer in boxing history. Whatever he says, the opposite is usually happening. Both Steward and Kellerman were correctly wondering whether Cotto would be able to maintain this pace with Margarito. Lampley called their statement "audacious." Steward almost had to apologize for saying that he thought the left uppercut would be Margarito's main weapon and that he thought that Margarito was too big for Cotto. He acted this way because Lampley was shamelessly promoting Miguel Cotto.
The clip at the end was truly classless. I don't think that HBO was pissed off with Cotto. I just think that they didn't know any better. They gave the boot to Larry Merchant who usually tried to wax poetically and make inane analogies about what took place. Think this was their attempt to show a "Raging Bull" type moment, but, of course, it reeked of taking advantage of Cotto and his family.
