Nationalism in boxing #2

The fight we were treated to this past weekend was so truly amazing that not only has it created countless threads on this forum but I think all of them. It was one for the ages that we will continue to talk about for the rest of the year no doubt, it turned the WW division on its ass and now not only are new questions brought up but old ones are being revisted. It was a great fight.

In my excitement I made a thread "Calling out all haters/Cotto Fans" as I am sure many have read because I have tons of negative rep. and have had to squabble back and forth with many Cotto and even some Margarito fans. In hindsight I think just the name of the thread was grounds to upset many people but then my subsequent post was enough to piss the rest of them off.

I make no excuses, Boxing in itself is very passionate and every boxing fan, true fan, can get carried away in it. But, as I had stated in another thread when it comes to rivalries such as the Mexico V. Puerto Rico one it gets even more intense and while the things I said were possibly rude and disrespectful towards some fans it was never meant to take away anything from Cotto himself, sh*t I would not have stood in there for the amount of time he did taking half the shots, so I would never ever take away from him. But I got carried away in the rivalry, watching Toni beat Cotto was satisfying only because I, as a Mexican, back Mexican fighters always, maybe that makes me less of a "purist" but when it comes to me picking my figthers I always go for the Mexicans first, I am just proud that way. Following that I always go for the hispanic/latin fighter, hence Cotto/Juddah I was Cotto, Cotto/Mosley I was Cotto, etc.

I know for sure that the Brit fans go for Hatton first, I have yet to meet or talk to a Brit fan that was pro Mayweather in their fight, Im sure there is but I have not met them. And I know the Black fans are pro Mayweather and wanted to see him beat Oscar. I dont think there is anything wrong with that you are just proud to be Mexican, Black, White, Purple, Jew, whatever you are.

I do apologize to everyone I have offended, or pissed off, or anything. Never my intention. I was just excited and had built up so much around having a great Mexican fighter back in the ring (following M. Pacquiao's destruction of all our fighters in the lower weight divisions) that I couldnt wait to tell everyone who had doubted him.

So again I apologize, but I wonder if now all these subsequent threads about the Roids, the poison, the what ifs, the Fairy Godmother, Santa, the easter bunny, are you really doubting TOni or are you backing up and trying to cover your fighter, your Boriqua countryman?

National pride is ok in small doses but seriously your parents shagged there and you were born in a country or an aircraft or boat in which case you take on that natonality.

Blood lines are thicker for real and have a long history; but fighters are fighters and require respect from all fans. I hate people who boo fighters into the ring, if it wasnt for their money they wouldnt be welcome to stand in the same room as a warrior really.

yo bro, when i was at the calzaghe/hopkins fight i was sat next to a welsh guy who was a mayweather fan & he flew over there to cheer on mayweather @ the hatton/mayweather fight, so there are some brits who are not hatton fans, but not many.

Agree with you completely, and I never have or will boo or disrespect a fighter, again cuz I'm not doing it so cheers for them who have that warrior spirit, and while I agree with you about taking on the country where you were borns nationality; the simple truth about it here in the U.S. (I dont know where you are from) is that while we are all "U.S. Citizens" the very system seperates us out. We are classified as African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Latin-Americans", Etc. So the very goverment and/or media keeps us to our roots and then they wonder why we wave our own countrys flags around. They place labels like minority on us, I dont know how it is in Kansas, but in California, Mexicans are the majority and "Anglo/white" are the minority, but they dont call themselves that? But all this is another story completely not related to boxing but it give you an idea of why I keep on cheering for Mexican boxers even though I was born in Torrance CA. (same hospital as TOni, haha)

Passion tempered by reason is the way I always approach supporting my favourite fighters, cause almost every one of Joe's fights I've watched I've had a nagging worry at the back of my mind that he'd lose. But it don't stop me yelling.

In terms of the build-up to this fight, there's been so much baiting and trash-talk that I can see people do care, but nobody likes a bad winner except his mommy .

Trust me, I have many times over now about being a "bad winner" but damn I just love that my guy wins especially when so many people wrote him off that its so hard to not say...TOld you so.
