When I picture a fight between Tony and Floyd, I first of course think of Tony the destroyer's ability to just wear down opponents the way he just slowly but surely took Cotto apart.. But that's my optimism of liking Tony and not particularly being a huge lover of Floyd..
But the second thing i'll think of is Floyd putting on the show the same he has done with every other pressure/heavy hitting guy he's been up against. Picking off jabs and counters left, right and centre. 12 rounds of lateral movement and forcing his opponents to chase chase chase,,,, and look silly doing it.
What has helped Floyd to be able to do that though, is that he actually HAS hit his opponents hard with counters and made them hesitate coming in... The people who were perceived to be real threats to Floyd in the day, were perceived as a threat because they possibly had the ability to smother Floyds work and continually pound away at him.. Whether he runs or not, they are going to punish him with so many punches that he can't possibly withstand it..
That is actually all well and good, but all these fighters have gotten caught with enough of Floyds nice, HARD counters, that they've had to think twice about walking through too many more of them...
It's the fact Floyd gets on his bike for 12 rounds that wins him fights.
But it's equally the fact Floyd makes even the hardest fighters hesitant to charge in on him just to land their own punches..
Margarito's style is perfect to beat Floyd in my opinion,,,,,
IF
His head is made of solid steal, and he can literally walk through every single one of Floyd's punches without being effect, and punish him all the same as if he were a punching bag..
If anyone thought Hatton had a chance, it would have been because of 2 things :
1. They thought he could push, chase, push and get inside Floyd WITHOUT being bothered by his punches.
2. Bang away on Floyd like a punching bag, regardless of how much he tries to run.
If someone can fulfill those 2 conditions, they have a very very good chance of f'ing Floyd up...
The entire problem though, is that no one that has faced Floyd has gone unbothered by his punches.. To come up with a gameplan to beat Floyd's "skills" alone,,, you almost have to ignore the fact he hits back... But he does.. And the combination of the 2, running and punching, is next to impossible to beat...
But take away one of those attributes?................... That's another story..
To beat Floyd's game, you have to have a chin that makes Floyds punches count for zero...
Does Margarito have that chin
If Margarito could withstand Floyds punches, I believe he could hand Floyd his first zero..
Floyd is a skilled runner, but that's half his game. If his other half (his attack of course) can be withstood by an opponent, then he is by no means in my eyes unstoppable...
Unfortunately no one was up to that challenge during Floyd's career, and possibly no one will get a chance in Floyd's retirement.
