A win over Pacquiao means nothing for Oscar and a loss would just be ridiculous. This fight does NOTHING for Oscar's legacy....it can only help Pacquiao.
Oscar should stop being such a pussy and fight Margarito. Tony is a top level fighter he's tough, he's Mexican, he's mouthy, he's exciting, and he's in his prime AND he and Oscar have history with each other. I think a win over Margarito really would be the icing on Oscar's career and a KO win which is a remote possibility would be a great way to end a career. Meanwhile if Tony wins Oscar passes the torch to a new star and if Tony KO's Oscar then WOW what better way to set up a match vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.?
Reading from the replies, there's really no solid reason(s) why Hoya is picking Pacquiao (aside from money)...
This lead me to believe that there's some personal issues between Hoya and Pacquiao that needs to be settled on top of the ring...
We all agree that it's primarily due to the huge money but Hoya already had so much money. Why he wanted to get into this loss-loss situation and suffer all the criticism thrown at him for picking a smaller warrior?
There must be something personal in this fight...
De La Hoya isn't a money chaser, he has foughten the best opposition, I truly think he believes Pacquaio is the best challenge for him, and the biggest fight he could have to leave his career. I think its more that this fight will bein the spotlight of sports media like Mayweather-De La HOya, and that Margarito-De La HOya wouldn't be this big, not because of the money, but because De La HOya wants to go out with a bash.
Because Pac is on the top of the hill. Beating Pac would greatly raise him up.
Look at Oscar and Manny two of the nicest guys in boxing....are they really angry with each other or do they just want to line their pockets
Oscar is just out for money right now when he could really go down (as he should) as a GREAT fighter by even fighting Antonio Margarito much less beating him which Oscar COULD do as he does have the wheels to box for 12 rounds AND seeing how Oscar brings so much bank he could have the fight at 154 or a 150 catch weight where he's more comfortable.
There is really no reason for a De la Hoya-Margarito fight not to happen it adds more to his legacy!!!
Pacquiao should fight Casamayor or Valero or Hatton he COULD win all those fights but they aren't going to be easy for him. He's a beast but he's not superhuman
David Diaz is a very nice person too & I met him in Berkeley. And yet pac Destroys him.
This fight needs to happen coz Boxing needs it. If DLH retires without fighting Pac, the PPV King torch will not be passed. We thought PBF will carry it but he stinks the joint & run away with our money & refused to fight the toughest test.
If DLH retires without fighting Pac, The mainstream Audience will still have no interest in watching all these Great Matchup waiting for Pac. Pac vs JMM, J Diaz, Casa & Campbell will be stuck with just for the Diehard Boxing fans only. The Mainsteam Audience will surely gravitate more to MMA instead after DLH.
If they do the DLH- Margarito, Do you think Margarito can carry the PPV & Boxing's torch after DLHMargo surely will beat DLH but he is not that exciting or Charismatic. It will not help boxing whatsoever. I don't think Margo can even be bigger than MAB & EM even if he beat DLH. Critic will say the DLH's shot & Old. He will still be avoided.
Now imagine Pac winning against DLHHIs excitement will be multiplied more than doubled. More people will be hyped for this Little & exciting guy. IT will help boxing in a Big way.
Look at the guys who carry boxing from Ali, SRL, TYson, & DLHThey all have something in common. They have speed, Power, Charisma, they are all likeable & has Big Cajones. Cotto & Margarito got no speed & Charisma. PBF in not a Likable & has a small Cajones. There's no other Choice but Pac. Don't look anywhere else.
No one aside from the Pacquiao fans are clammoring for this fight, it's a farce...no offense to the talent involved but Manny started his career at 106 pounds and Oscar started his career fighting where Manny is fighting right now.
No one can take Oscar's place if he never leaves the sport....I think Kelly Pavlik has the style and ability to carry the sport as do many other young fighters
Would anyone be praising Roy Jones Jr.-De la Hoya at 175Or Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Kelly Pavlik at 168
? Or Joe Calzaghe - Wladimir Klitschko
? Those could have HUGE PPV numbers but only huge PPV numbers IN THEORY because they are all complete mismatches due to the size differences between the fighters and De la Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao is no different....sure they have huge fan bases and dedicated fans but it won't make it a competitive fight or even an interesting fight because either Manny will be blown up or Oscar will be weight drained or both and there's no way I see Manny having a chance at winning this and if he did it would tarnish everything else Oscar had achieved before hand because no legit 154 pounder needs to lose to a guy still fighting at lightweight.
Oscar De la Hoya vs Antonio Margarito is a RELEVANT FIGHT AT 147 and even at 154....whereas Manny Pacquiao can't live at 147 he might beat De la Hoya but put him in vs anyone else and he's primed for a HUGE beat down....no offense to Manny but he can only gain so much weight and be effective
Pre, the American public could care less if our Hero fought Oscar. It will definitely generate gazillions in PPV etc... This crazy fight will not make PAC more likeable to them. Do you want the whole world to witness a Filipino Legend get battered from ringpost to ringpost?
