Yeah - Margarito like Hagler wasn't hurt to point of falling all over the shop.. and they were BOTH being hit by tremendous punchers.

If they had china-chins/temples they would have been OUT
From what I've seen, I wouldn't describe Santos as a "tremendous puncher" in the vein of a Tomas Hearns.

Come on CFH, don't be so pedantic.. Santos doesn't compare with Hearns but is a seriously HARD hitter.

A lesser fighter than Margarito would have been in SERIOUS trouble - from that "temple shot" - had he not a granite CHIN!!!

I always hear about how strong Margarito was coming on against Santos (not just from Spicoli) but unless I was seriously drunk, didn't Santos have one of his best rounds of the fight right before it was stopped. Seems to me that before that Margarito was coming on but then Santos had that big round and then it was stopped. I could have been drunk, etc.

Apparently I have nothing to add to the actual thread Fenster created.

Well in all fairness, seems there is something in common there.I to was shite canned that night .I actually did give Santos that round 9 but it was more in the body language Imo,You could see Margarito hitting that stride & he had him languishing on the ropes and Santos seemed a bit labored.I also think the ref blew a KD call in the 4th off the ropes,Santos was doing a lot of complaining and looked to go down from a right to body ??Santos was doing very well, dont get me wrong......pretty shifty in style. But Shame the cut brought it to a anti climatic close.

I don't really remember it that well. I've only watched it once, live. And I just vaguely remember thinking Santos had gotten it together right before it was stopped. Whether he would have kept it together is beyond me.

There was a fighter in the 30's called Terry "Iron Nose" Burns.

    FICTION!

To be honest at world level even the weaker punches still have enough power to put most out if they connect properly. Obviously there are exceptions...(Paulie with his bad hands).

I remember when Mayweather shook Oscar when Oscar was supposed to be much the bigger hitter. If you catch somebody just right...anything can happen.

Of course when your chin is weak and your defence is even weaker then you're sailing a sinking ship.

In my experience, getting knocked out has most to do with getting hit by a punch that you did not see coming.

"Amir Khan" (adjective) - a boxer having a chin more fragile than a glass.

    Jesse Feliciano vs. Mike Arnoutis.

Before this fight Feliciano was be compared with Chuvalo in terms of chin.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

Sure there are are freak punches that do more damage than should.

Guys like Hagler/MArciano not only had god given talents to absorb punches, but also kept there chins tucked in, and crucially wouldn't panic as they knew that some big shots would get through, keeping composure so not to be vulnerable to the follow up which knocks your head off.

Guys like Hearns and Lewis have been mentioned over the last couple days, true they didn't have granite chins but they certainly weren't glass. Not everyone who isn't Hagler/Chuvalo/.. should immediately be classed in the same bracket with guys who get wobbled frequently by club fighters of a smaller weight class. Like Ono said, higher up the ranks the punches are naturally heavier regardless of records.
