Fitting finale for De La Hoya?

Marco Antonio Barrera and Rocky Juarez faced off in a staredown on Thursday for reporters at the final news conference promoting their super featherweight title fight Saturday at Staples Center.

Since Oscar De La Hoya is the promoter of the event, he was besieged by reporters who wanted to know about his future as a fighter. Without trying, De La Hoya stole the show. He is coming off a sixth-round technical knockout of Ricardo Mayorga on May 6, and he has a standing Sept. 16 date with HBO for what would be his last fight.

De La Hoya, however, isn't sure if he indeed will have that last fight. If he does, he isn't sure who it will be against, either. But the consensus feeling is that DeLaHoya should make his last bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr., considered the best in the world, pound-for-pound.

"I can make more history by fighting the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but I don't want to make a quick decision," DeLaHoya said in a large office inside Staples Center.

De La Hoya said he has had a lot of input from family and friends. Especially from his wife, Millie.

"She says, `This is the perfect fight to go out on,"' De La Hoya said, in reference to the win over Mayorga, which earned De La Hoya the World Boxing.

Council super welterweight championship. "Then she says, `Would you look as good against either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Winky Wright? Maybe not.'

"And she has a point."

De La Hoya, 33, has won a record six titles in different weight divisions. If he retired now, he is a certain Hall of Famer.

A trip on his boat, `Tommy Crown,' to the island of Culebrita soon will help him decide if he wants to try and build on an already strong legacy.

"I'm going to get on my boat by myself and I'm going to go to our favorite island in Puerto Rico for a few hours and just soak it all in," he said.

Then, he said, everyone will know.


What do you think it will be guys? I am starting to swing in favour of retirement,especially if the old wifey has influence which appears to be the case here!! At least De La Hoya knows and admits he would not look anywhere near as good against Winky or Floyd.Why go out on a loss?

Now he's done the boxing world a favour and freed us from the nasty Mayorga he's presenting himself as a man torn, not knowing whether he has it in him to fight on or not ( read Rocky before the Drago fight, or probably in Oscar's mind Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane!)

Soon he will emerge from his boat trip (Jesus wilderness tests) to tell us he is going to fight Floyd after all. (floyd is Bush's Iran and North Korea combined!)

His fans will cheer, he will present himself once more as the saviour, and fight Floyd in a chance to pocket yet more gold and riches and hopefully have the glory of beating the p4p man in the world right now.

Your whole analyses is backwards and only proves that you should be investigated for mental instability and loose all your rights to travel abroad since you feel it would be positive for Iran and Korea to blow-up the U.S. However, I will break your diatribe/folly down for all the other anti-Americans on this forum.

First of All, if Oscar really wanted to force Mr. Pinocchio Boy Floyed to fight him then he would have took up Margaritos challenge for the 147-title belt. This would have given Oscar much more of the glory that he seeks and put him in a better position unless he is trying to get Mayweather to come up to 154 which won't happen for a while. Oscar went in for the knockout against Mayorga while George is taking his time in Iraq. Furthermore Mayorga has been bad mouthing and challenging Oscar for years just as Saddam and Alkaida has been challenging the U.S. so you got that backwards as well.

On the other hand, George probably did have plans to invade Iraq and it was actually a stepping stone to invade Iran but I doubt that it had much to do with oil but instead it was to disrupt nuclear locos as yourself in Iran while at the same time prevent Saddam from paying off Alkaida and Palestinian suicide bombers. However George and Oscar have some personal reason for fighting as well. For instance, George did indeed avenge the assassination attempt of his father while Oscar has admitted that he fought so hard for his father’s approval.

If you were capable of understanding a post you might have grasped that I at nowhere suggested it would be good for Iran or Korea to blow up the US. I do indeed think however that just as Oscar fighting Floyd, Mr Bush will indeed get more than he bargains for if he tries to do to Iran or North Korea what he did to Iraq.

Again I never said Mayorga was an evil dicator, just that Oscar chose him to fight because he could portray himself as the dignified decent man against the wild and nasty Mayorga, a case of good Vs evil. Actually you completely misundstood this part. I'm a Mayorga fan, he was ripped off financially in this fight, portrayed as the villain and then sent packing back to Nicuragua whilst Goldenboy took the title and 80% of the purse for the fight.

Ok let me make it clear I NOT want a nuclear war to take place! I don't like De La Hoya much it is true, as I think he has carefully manufactured his image as the goldenboy, like he's the true American idol.

It's true serious boxing fans would have liked De La Hoya to fight Margarito but De La Hoya, chose to fight the easy target and one who could get him to what he wanted with little risk and make him look good at the same time.

That is EXACTLY what Bush did! It was Saudia Arabians that caused the trade centre tragedy NOT Iraq! To go after the real perpetrators would have been financially unwise and dangerous to Bush - Saudi relations, so Bush chose instead to pick on Iraq which had no connections to the Trade Centre at all, but Bush made out that Saddam was an evil threat to the US and the public (not all) bought it and the invasion went ahead.

That is JUST like De La Hoya, for Margarito read Saudi's, not a wise plan for Bush or De La Hoya to go after.


Mayorga was a great choice for De La Hoya, he got the chance to look all great and noble and dignified. Now he's after the true crown Mayweather.

But Mayweather will beat him.
