Agreed what the hell is this guy on about ? why has boxing got to be just about brawling ? boxing is also an art and i do love watching fighters like Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, and infact i've seen both men have to exchange toe to toe and take flush punches.

And also Larry Holmes was a boxer who used his great jab and his outside game to never let his opponents get in, and he rarely brawled only if he had to. But look what he did to Trevor Berbick in a street fight ? he kicked his ass. I think its stupid to base boxing styles, on how a certain boxer would do in a street fight.

its boxing mate, its a sport, theres a craft to it and artistry its a sweet science......... there was some years ago a fella who was world street fighting champ bare knuclke champion, won something like 49 fights all by ko...... he got in the ring, fought a 40 yearld bert cooper.......... the first jab bert landed shook the fella the next punch layed him clean out............ that was his only pro boxing contest, it lasted 1 min.........he went back to bare knuckle

not about a slick boxing match with rules in a boxing ring (which I have great appreciation for.) I'm on-topic here.

These comments above are a bit elitist and preachy like I'm somehow missing the mark regarding scientific boxing, but I've been watching this sport for over 25 years. What if it were in an alley, fellas? That's the discussion here, not slick scientific boxing within rules.

Would you be intimidated AT ALL if a pure boxer like Ivan Calderon was coming at you in a street-fight?

Do you think it would be wise for you to employ Ali's rope-a-dope technique if you were in a streetfight?
Lean up against a lightpole or brick wall and let the opponent hit you for 20 minutes or so until he's tired out?

The modern amateur system is in fact NOT conducive to producing a good professional.

The point I would make is there are some fighters who would come out the winner whether in a Boxing match, MMA match, or a street-fight, and some slicksters who would get killed in a streetfight.
Billy Conn was pretty damn slick, but without much power.
His father-in-law knocked him out in a street-fight.

It is my belief that many world-class boxers could become MMA champions with about 18 to 24 months of grappling training.
Talent pool is the difference.
About 19 thousand pros in Boxing contrasted with about 5 thousand or so pro MMA fighters. That tells the tale right there.
The cream-of-the-crop of combat athletes will ALWAYS go where the REAL money is. 8 million or so per fight in Boxing contrasted with about 150 thousand per fight in the UFC. Higher Affliction payouts are a good sign though.

Floyd Mayweather would still beat 99% of 147 pound evryday joes in the world in a street fight. He'd avoid punches, be strong and fit, and still hit harder and faster than almost anyone that size. He would have great self defence. Just cos some world class fighters might be tougher dont mean he wouldnt still be good in a street fight.

True, but if Mayweather met Hatton or Castillo in an alley, my money would be on Hatton or Castillo. Hatton would ground and pound Floyd Matt Hughes style.

Of the fighters today, I would put my money on Tony Margarito over almost anybody. I seriously think Tony could whip Joe Calzaghe in an alley.
