The responses so far have pretty much been way to extreme imo. Either people think he can never do anything to gain more respect as he's already simply so great and some people are just stupid, and then the haters who add substance to that theory. Of course he doesn't need to gain respect in the sense he doesn't have any, that's complete shit he's had a great career. But I think it COULD hurt him in a sense fighting Roy Jones at this stage. It all depends too much on what Roy(and even Joe as well) have left to give. I really don't like Roy's chances to win myself given his legs, but if he looks good in the ring and Joe still deals with him then that goes a great way to increase his stock imo. I mean it's quite possible Calzaghe could show something to suggest he may have given a prime Roy Jones a close fight, it's also possible that he could win and yet still suggest he wouldn't have stood a chance. And then not to mention the possibility that Roy could turn back the clock enough to pull out the greatest win of his career. It is definetly an extremely interesting fight with signifigance for both guys, it's way to late but the clash of styles is tremendous. Also a pretty good undercard, Zab Judah vs someone and Frankie Figuroa(good fighter) fighting Gavin Rees.
Without the Jones win, which led to the Tarver win, Johnson wouldn't have the credibility he does.
Calzaghe was going to fight him before he sparked Roy. So.. had Calzaghe beaten him he wouldn't have got the Roy fight, which means he'd just be classed as a tough journeyman type (win or lose to Calzaghe).
Naturally, after beating Jones and Tarver, it was clear he'd been robbed by everyman and his dog throughout his career![]()

Respect, respect, wah no respect.
I don't tink Calzaghe doesn't get respect by more then like 5 people here.
I respect what Calzaghe has done, I was in the camp that said he needed to fight Kessler, well he did that he adjusted like a champion and won a clear decision. I don't like Calzaghe's style, it is not entertaining to me, but I respect what he has done. I don't think any result in the Jones fight will make me gain or lose respect for him.
Credit where credit is due, Calzaghe earned his ring rankings.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
Ahhh, I didn't get your angle on that one. Guess I wasn't aware it would've spoiled the Jones Jr fight. If it had took place before that and Glen didn't pull off the upset he would've had a much tougher time competing at the top level until now, obviously. Guess I just took exception to the comment as Johnson is a perfectly capable fighter who has been on very good form since then. Don't think it's out of the question he could have beaten Calzaghe, or at least done well enough to be regarded as more than a journeyman. I think he would have made some surge forward as a contender even without the Jones Jr fight though, it's not as though there are a bunch of guys more likely to have landed big fights considering his throwback approach.

I'm not a Calzaghe hater, but I'm certainly a bit of critic when it comes to him being over protected and being a total slapper for the the last 4 years or so. I give him plenty of respect for the Kessler fight, and beating Hopkins, even if just barely. 43 or not, Hopkins is still one of the best in the world. He's the Nolan Ryan of boxing.
How much credit he gets in MY book depends somewhat depends on how Jones looks and how he goes into the fight mentally. Jones has looked progressively better since Tarver 3, and he's improved some technical flaws that he used to mask with almost godlike reflexes. He still has his handspeed and some tools that could give Joe problems. If Jones looks good, and Calzaghe still beats him clearly, it'll give him credit. I think Jones actually has a chance in this fight, because I don't think he will go in afraid of getting hit and that will allow him to open up.
