    Default There, their, they're

At the risk of making myself unpopular, no-one likes a smartass, I am going to point out a frequent error, which is misuse of these words. It happens a lot here.

"There" usually indicates a place, not posession.
    "Their" indicates posession.

    for example:
" ... Colombians and there punching power" is wrong.
"... Colombians and their punching power" is correct.

"Over there in Colombia there are lots of heavy hitters" indicates correct usage of the word "there".

"They're" is a contraction of the phrase They are.

For example, "Over there in Colombia, their punches are heavy because they're always taking steroids." is gramatically correct but most likely factually incorrect.

Another frequent mistake is misuse of the word "of"

"Could of, would of, should of" is never ever correct. It is always "could have, would have, should have"

ok that's it. Sorry for pontificating, I just wanted to boost my post count up closer to 100.

I always had this problem at school and by the time i left at 16, i still hadn't learned it and my punctuation and spelling sucked. By typing on here frequently its helped improve my spelling and punctuation ETC.

Yah, I've noticed it's a lot better then it used to be. Hope you didn't take it personally.

    cheers.

Actually a valid point.I was thinking about this.I tend to overuse "Though", do not know why.Also...we should outlaw "IMO".

No i agree with you i also think why many people can't read or write etc, is because words like "Thought" "Fought" sound the same and people get mixed up. I know i did when i was younger.

It affects us all. People write things in emails they wouldn't think of writing down on paper. Myself included. Definitely writing skills have declined with the advent of email, text messaging etc. Most times it doesn't matter at all, but when you are conducting business, it certainly does.

After school (Back when you used stone tablets) I work where every thing is written in abbreviations. Same thing when it came to being on-line in chat rooms (Back in the day)

Now I am having to re-learn to spell and use proper grammar and living in Oz where they spell things slightly, differently does not help much.

Some poster had a test on this which should be bumped up to teach Saddoinans how to use the words correctly.

It's nice to meet someone else who shares my distate for improper pronunciation and spelling.

It's one of my pet hates, although I'm guilty of it myself sometimes and it winds me up no end.

When I'm in a hurry I'll often write you're when I mean to write your and then when I read over my past threads and notice it, I feel like an uneducated illiterate and hope nobody else notices.

Thankfully aside from a small handful of maybe half a dozen most posters on here write like English is their third language so obviously don't notice my faux pas!

Ive called you out a few times on your dubious grammar and sentence construction. Admittedly, you show signs of improvement. I shall bless you.
