I like a lot of bands from both countries. The big names do seem to be British though.

I'd have to say more of teh really big superstar bands came from the UK, but who do bands like the Stones and Zeppelin cite as their influences? The American blues artists like Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, etc. This is where rock and roll derived from.

America. As other's have said, British (and American) Rock and Roll was derived from African American music. It rose to prominence in the States in the 50's.
Acts like Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, Elvis, Little Richard etc. got the ball rolling.
Edit: How could I forget Chuck fucking Berry

England it started here.
Johhnie Kid wrote 'shakin all over' he was English.
The Pirates were his band and they are English and they still play and still rock the house.

When the blues went electric with Little Walter ,Sonny Boy Williams etc it got funkier and chunkier then it turned into Smoking punchy style bar room blues with boogies etc thats more towards the tips of the roots.
The tip or the seed has to be Robert Johnson.
