He sort of reminds me of boxings Andy Rooney.Stuck in his era, repetative and a bit aloof. It may be a generational thing as many are used to 'talkin it up' and banter in a crowded room,No blogs or on line or such.If not for "Boxing Illustrated" prior to the ease of the internet in the early 90's,I would have been blind in spots to what was going on.Just stacked with info/results.
Never met the man in person but I once called the phone number on the contents page of B.I with questions about a subscription right before the Mercer vs. Holmes fight. The man on the other end said he was Bert Sugar,I did not believe him and wondered why he answered his own phone...he said "because it was ringing".I mentioned the "Huge" fight and Mercer,Bert sugar (?) said Holmes was "going to get clobbered" and told me to call back later with order questions and hung upDid seem a bit stiff but oh well.

I deleted some posts that contained foul language. Main board rules. Nothing personal.
He knows his stuff, but he talks about fights that happened before he was born as if he was there, and glorifies fighters who retired or were dead long before he was born. Does he know a lot about the sport in terms of its history? Sure, but the extent of his actual boxing knowledge as a tactician or somebody who has actually boxed I would argue that he doesn't know that much, his observations that I have read in his books are limited, he states the obvious because I am assuming he doesn't know the woodworks of actual boxing, not just boxing trivia.
