Wouldn't it make more sense to NOT have the gun in the first place?

That way you have no worries about your kids killing themselves, you, or anybody else... with a gun, of course.

But what if the British come back or the government tries to impose its will via a standing army?

Well a gun wont do much good in that instance. It will quickly get you killed. Actually.. you could quickly kill yourselves. So maybe a gun is a good thing after all.
