Things under that tyrant are probably looking pretty rosy about now.
You can't force people to take up democracy (and if you think there is any real democracy in the West, you're dreaming). Especially in a place with no tradition of democracy. The Middle East has been a quagmire for nearly 100 years due to Western intervention.

yea it can not be force and no im not dreaming about democracy in the west. I said a chance at democracy and what we have here is a Republic. People may think we have a democracy but ask the official question of the state, what kind of goverment do we have? the only right answer is. REPUBLIC.

Yeah if that dude had thrown that shoe at Saddam he would have been tortured and then killed.....then Saddam might have "asked" if anyone else knew of this plot and had them killed too.......I'm not quite sure if "rosey" is the best way to describe that.

Actually most of that death count was us.
Between the sanctions, the fly overs,GW1,and us giving him all those nasty toys for the war with Iran.
We've got our paws all over that, not to mention encouraging the Kurds to revolt and leaving them high and dry.
At least Sadaam kept the lights on,and the plumbing working, which is more then we can seem to pull off.
Actually no, the death count is the responsibility of the person who made a choice to do the killing. You don't blame Smith and Wesson if I go out and shoot a gas station attendant with a .38 Special.
As for encouraging the Kurds, it appears I need a history lesson. Any trustworthy websites you might recommend on that topic?

The King of Jordan actually fired the first shot in the Iran-Iraq war. I used to have the photograph somewhere but it's lost on some hard drive. The war was originally a pan-Arab war against the Iranians and all the Arab leaders backing it were our puppets, like the King of Jordan. They just left most of the fighting to the Iraqis. After Saddam gassed all those Kurds we were still supporting him. Mainly the US government but the British government also built him gas factories and facilities after the Kurds got gassed too.
