Though it seems the SPCA has chilled on their Pit Bull policy, they used to have a strict euthanasia policy toward Pits.
In the early 90's I had to be away for work for an extended period of time,so I left my dog and her pup with my mom, because I really only wanted to pay for a one room joint to save money. My mom got sick,so my Aunt more or less took over my moms trailer, including my dogs and everything I owned that I hadnt taken with me.
Rather then calling me,she burnt all my stuff, and handed over both of my dogs to the SPCA,by the time I found out what she had done, the SPCA had allready euthanized the pair of them including the 6 month old puppy.
Needless to say,my Aunt and I dont talk very often any more, and the SPCA wont be getting a donation from me any time soon. There are more then enough no-kill shelters that could use my coin

Pit bulls were banned in Ontario a few years ago. I don't think they can take away an existing, pet, but no new pit bulls in the province.

I hate those breed bans, their stupid as hell. Ban all the Pit Bulls you want, and guess what, the dog attack statistics dont go down. The a-holes that are irresponsible enough to raise a dog thats inclined to attack, just find another breed du jour. Hell before the crack invasion in the states(crack heads want tough dogs) Pits had one of the lowest dog related death rates in the states

Logic says you are right TM, but reality was saying someting else here. There was a long string of high prodile attacks by pit bulls, particularly on children, It just kept happening. There was a large public outcry, and something had to be done. Maybe not the best thing was done, but better that than nothing at all.

Stats bear it out,Britain has had a Pit ban for years, attacks didnt go down, just the number of Pit Bulls. In the states, the Pit isnt the drug dealer dog Du Jour anymore,Pit attacks have dropped, and Rottweiler attacks have risen, ban Rottweillers, they'll just find another dog. Theyre allready starting to use Chows for dogfighting, because theyre more aggresive then Pits and Rotties,so theyre easier to train for dogfighting. And then they'll ban Chows, and then some other dog will take its place.
Unfortunatly just like you cant ban idiots from being parents, its even harder to ban them from owning dogs
Fun factoid,in the states,in 1979 the breed most likely to be responsible for a dog related death was a Great Dane

And if I sound ever so no it ally on the subject of Pits and their attack statistics, owning one responsibly, you kind of have to. Otherwise the neighbors act like complete dorks about it. When we first bought the house, they acted like Malachi was going to eat all the children and slow moving elderly people. Now they mainly worry that he whines cry and barks when I leave the house because he worries about where I am.
