It was for a lot more than that. He had been warned about his conduct repeatedly. The NHL only suspended him for 7 games I think, but his team suspended him indefinitely (they did not release him, they signed him to a 4 year contract this summer - for a ridiculous amount of money considering his lack of and real on ice talent - and they will be able to buy him out this summer). The suspension was also for his own benefit in some ways; he can't fight for shit and Dion Phaneuf would've beat the dog shit out of him. Avery is just a contrived idiot who loves the spotlight. It wasn't an off the cuff remark, it was clearly prepared well in advance. Apparently his team, including his teammates (all of whom LOATHED him) had warned him not to do it. Dallas was in last place when he left the team, now they're in reach of a playoff spot. I can't believe his publicist was somehow able to convince the American hockey media (all 3 of them) that he was a "superstar" (as I have heard him referred to) or even a decent player. He's nothing more than an agitator with limited offensive and defensive ability.
Watch how contrived it is, he walks out of the dressing room and up to the media during a scrum, asks if they have a camera, and then starts talking.

And Bilbo, threatening someone if no way to get them to sing your praises.
