I think it's supposed to be if they weren't prepared for the punch. If they had punched a human like that it would have just ripped a hole in him, but that force just blew them back. Think of it like kicking a rubber ball. Your foot isn't strong enough to tear it in half, but you can kick it hard enough to send it pretty far.

I liked Superman Returns. My beef with it was it was too much of a Richard Donner tribute. Singer should have given us a villain other than the tired old Lex Luthor and there was so much else that was reminiscent of the first movie. I did think it was funny how they intentionally ignored III and IV. But I have heard the next one is supposed to have Brainiac as the villain.
