Getting 1st Dan in 3 years either means you are an exceptional student, or they weren't too stringent with the standards .... that's all.

Incidentally, it is very likely that a good boxing gym would help you lose weight - don't forget that boxers have to make weigth so lots of the training is actually about making weight as well as the boxing. Hitting a heavy bag, skipping and all the aerobic work boxers do is better at helping people lose weight than the tkd training I did, which has a different focus.
I don't know much about the eastern martial arts, but I do know that this is much more aligned with traditional time lines. That's a long time. I've boxed for a while now and wanted to supplement it with some judo, but considering the time and cost, chose to simply become a better boxer. It would be nice to know how long it took Munky to get his black belt in judo. Munk?
