When I throw combinations on the heavy bag, I try to imagine what my opponent is doing - what defense is he presenting? Am I leading or countering? Is my goal to fight at a distance or get inside? If I'm inside close to the bag, I try to execute combinations that keep me on the inside, and then I imagine I'm punching my way back out.
I don't think I maximized the benefit of the heavy bag until I actually started sparring and tried to use those experiences to drive my bagwork. If you are just that the beginning, it's fine to have a few set combos and just work the bag trying to perfect the technique on the punch and keep balance while throwing combinations. In fact, I'm no expert and I'm just getting back to the gym, so that's what I'm doing now.
