Just finished watching my newest boxing DVD: J.C. Chavez - The ultimate Mexican Hero, and at the end when he lost his final fight and he broke down in the dressing room I got a bit of a lump in my throat.

He was one of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing and he wasn't able to handle this "Palooka" as he called him.

Anyway it is a really good watch for anyone who hasn't seen it and I really do recommend it!

ye it is a great documentary, it was a bit shocking to see how he himselof gets frustrated with jr if he tries to box, bad management possibly

Quality fighter and legend. Chin and skin was solid. Punched constantly and relentlessly and killer left hook to the body and right cross. Superb and very under rated boxing skills. His defence was great at blocking and parrying punches just so he could get inside and rip you a part. The first p4p king. Absolute privilege to watch his fights.

I like Chavez and all but I think Benny Leonard, Hank Armstrong, Ray Robinson, Roberto Duran, Ray Leonard, and Tommy Hearns might disagree with Chavez being the "first p4p king".


JC Chavez's tenacity and determination reminds me a lot of Marciano and honestly JC's win over Taylor mirrored Marciano KO-ing Walcott only #1 Chavez waited until the last seconds of the fight to land his punch and #2 Rocky dropped Walcott and Joe didn't get back up...but other than that very similar, those guys never showed frustration and they kept fighting and kept going forward and it paid off.

I honestly cannot remember the term p4p best until JCC was around. I thought is came about because there were too many alphabet titles.

We've talked about this one before.
The 1st P4P list was made in '89 by the ring mag.
As seen on the list here:

So according to the list by the ring mag. Mike Tyson was the 1st P4P fighter ever then it was JCC then Pernell.
However it is said that the term P4P was 1st used with SRR.

I think what Lyle is saying is that he could compile a list of fighters who were P4P #1 prior to the 1st list made in '89.

Agreed.This is what I hate about p4p lists and why thay are a mind melt.Chavez blows the doors off of Tyson when it comes to all around boxing ability,level of comp,etc.Tyson was/is a household name,an explosive heavyweight making news in the ring and maybe just as much outside of it.Personally...I dont see him as a "p4p" fighter.

Great fighter but was a bit of a spoilt brat when he lost or things were not going his way.

Used to love watching his fights on sky tv and itv in the 90s.

Many great fighters are bad losers, Eric Morales comes to mind as they are not use to losing, when it happens it hurts them. they could be humble but why lie.

In his 2nd fight with Randell always springs to mind of an example of bad sportsmanship.

All his defeats, he disputed the first loss to Randall, ODH first fight, did not give him credit in the second. No big deal, at his best he would have destroyed them and the fact that you are getting old did hurt his pride.
